It sounds like you do need a thermostat with your heat shut off and the gauge will raise a little then the car doesn't have that heat drawn from it indicating that you most likely do need a thermostat. As far as the fans coming on immediatly that could be a different problem it is most likely the coolant temperature sensor that tells the fan's when to come on. If this sensor says the coolant is hot the fans will come on immediatly. These are seperate problems as the coolant temperature sensor does not have anything to do with the cabin heating system. You should first check the level of your coolant is full, This could also cause your cabin heating system to perform poorly, and may have adverse effects to the engine cooling system. (fans)

Whenever the coolant is low it is going to affect the heating system. That is where I would start.

If there are no leaks, you may have a blown head gasket. The heater stops working when air or combustion gasses get into the cooling system.

Over heats when a/c is on. what should i check and how. oil and coolent filled to correct levels.

The most likely problem is your cooling fans. They should come on when you turn on the A/C and I suspect they aren't. Running A/C puts a lot of strain on an engine and the cooling fans should switch on as soon as you turn it on. Just lift the hood and watch the fans and see if they turn on when someone turns on the A/C. It's probably just a bad wire or sensor that's not working but get it looked at soon. Overheating is never good for an engine. Hope this helps.

2001 Olds Alero suddenly quits sending heat then sometimes it does and sometimes it overheats. Is this a water pump or a thermostat. Help. Mallory M

Check the cooolant level, sound like theres a leak somewhere, water pump, hoses, t-stat bad, rad cracked, heater core leaking, bad rad cap, cooling fans not working, you need to get it looked at really soon, before you get it to hot and blow a head gasket.

My 2002 Outback A/C is not working correctly. It runs cold while I am driving but turns warm as soon as I slow down or stop. I just had it recharged but no change.

Your 2002 outback has two cooling fans mounted on the radiator, one cooling fan runs only when the engine requires cooling and the other fan only comes on when the A/C is in use or if the engine temp requires extra cooling. The A/C cooling fan should come on almost at the same time when the A/C has been turned on (if the car is up to operating temp), if it is not coming on you will not move enough air through the condenser to remove the heat the A/C coolant (freon) has collected from inside the cabin. Check your fans operation.

Why does the fan keep running on 2005 jetta after turning off

You are talking about the thermo electric cooling fan, its operation is independent of the car's electical system. It is switched on and off by the engine temperature. When you park, the engine heat soaks upward to heat the thermostat turning the fan on. It will run until the engine cools down and the thermostat switches it off. Quite normal operation.

1996 Honda Odyssey engine cooling fan stays on.

I don't thing there is a short there is radiator fan switch that control these fan, it works off of heat. There is also a fan relay that control look in fuse box inside the hood for fan relay and make sure its NOT stuck , if it isn't then its the fan switch. This switch may be bad and cause the fan to turn on. Replace radiator fan switch located on water outlet on engine and this should solve your problem. A

Over heating

Have you checked the water level? Have you raised the hood and checked to see if the fans are turning when the light comes on?
