Possible convergence problem

I havea Toshiba Cinema Series 60" model 61h70. The picture across the bottom and in upper right hand corner look 3-d. Colors are overlapping. I think the convergence is out of whack. I think a convergence chip went out. Can I replace them myself? I really don't want to spend a fortune if it's something I can do.

You could replace it yourself. I had it done recently and the local repair shop charge $400 to do it (including cost of the chip).

My Toshiba cinema series HD separates the red & blue color.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Convergence is off in the lower right and upper left corner

The repair isn't too complicated if you're comfortable working with a soldering iron. Sounds like one of the "guns" is shot. The chips that need replacing are attached to the heatsink on the convergence board. The reason for replacing both chips is if you're going to bother to take the board out and replace one bad chip, that is the best time to replace the other older chip. The link below is to step by step instructions including pictures of the repair. You can check it out to see if you want to try it. If not, the repair is expensive (between 250-400) depending on the repairman. Best of luck with your convergence problem.

YOU HAVE A CONVERGENCE PROBLEM IC'S WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE FACT THAT THE LINES DID NOT MOVE WHEN YOU TRIED TO ADJUST THEM CONFIRMS IT.

Convergence ICs there are two of them both STK392-120 and you will need two 6.8 ohm resistors. You can get the replacement parts at the following link with free installation instructions with pictures.

Toshiba 61H70 Weird Convergence Issue?

They may have gotten some cheap convergence ICs, thats a real possibility. I would recommend switching the two origional STK392-110 with some STK392-150 they will run alot cooler and last alot longer. Just use a good coating of heat sink compound on the back of the ICs. I will post a link where you can get top quality Convergence ICs and they provide free instalation instructions with pictures so you can do the job yourself in under an hour and save quite a bit of money. Heres the link.

PROBLEM W/ 61H70 CONVERGENCE

You need to re-solder the circuit board that contains the STK convergence modules. They're on the center circuit board attached to an aluminum heat sink that's about 8" long and 6" tall, about dead center in the circuit board. You may be able to recreate the problem by gently moving the heat sink (which the modules are connected to). This gives the hour glass effect on the picture and the advanced convergence screen. This is an indication that the modules pins aren't solidly connected (meaning soldered) properly. Remove the circuit board and clean the old solder off & resolder the modules pins to the circuit board reconnected the board and then retest by again pushing on the heat sink. This is a caused by a minimum effort (a.k.a. minimum cost) solder job, probably done in some 3rd world sweat shop. The "factory" job was good enough for 3-4 years but the heat (and these modules do create a lot of heat) and stress created from repeated use eventually takes it's toll, weakens the pin connections and our problem occurs. take the appropriate cautions working around the high voltage of the set & use a non-conduting piece of wood to push the heat sink when we doing tests.
Best of luck, hope ya fix it.

Jittering screen

Chassis will need to be pulled by a skilled technician. Some specific area hand-soldering is needed and the STK convergence IC's need changing w/OEM or better quality parts. You have a good set worthy of repair.
