I've added the GSA-E30L to my laptop and no matter what I try it will only recognize CDs. It performs like it is only a CD burner. When I have the oem disk in the drive, explorer shows the hardarw name as LG DVD-W, when I take it out it changes to DVD RAM drive, and when I put in a blank DVD it changes to CD Drive

I have same DVD writer and I am facing the same problem. During R&D for such failure on google I came to know there are two different Laser Diodes for CD and DVD. CD read write is working for me. I think DVD r-w laser has some problems. I am currently looking for options to get the new laser diode. As soon I replace the diode and see my DVD writer working. I will upload the video to replace the diode for you all.
Some DVD/CD drivers have two lasers: one for DVD and the other for CD. Not sure if this is your case but looks like the laser for CD discs is gone. The only way to repair it to replace the pickup mechanism. Anyway, it's hard to diagnose your issue as it may be caused by drivers, dust, software that interferes with the CD/DVD drivers, etc.
