Thanks. I ended up buying a torque screwdriver that fit into the three awkward (and hidden) screws to open the motor compartment. There was a sponge filter that was very dirty so I washed it, but it shut off again the next time I used it. I will try to look for more obstructions.

There are no other obstructions. What on earth is wrong with this thing? Bosch has such a good reputation, but this is not good enough.

Bosch told me to contact Turnpike Appliance @ 877/822-2775 for instructions for repair. They said it needs a new circuit board for about $70 but I'd have to mail it to New York. Mine is a year and a half old and they say it's out of warranty.

I spoke with the only authorized Bosch vac repair place near NYC, and its way out on Long Island! They said it is probably the control board (the suction is fine) and would sell one for $35. My unit is about 7 years old and otherwise works well. I aim to attempt to install it myself.

Some of these have the Hepa filter on the back, if so there will be a door to access it. If there is one, some had a reset button that you push, mainly for when you change the fifter, if it has one, push that reset, if it needs to be re-set, it will shut off after a seconds. Remove the Hepa filter and look see if there is a reset button. https://portal.bsh-partner.com/portal(bD1kZSZjPTAwOQ==)/PORTALFRAME.HTM, this will give you a link for a user manual. If you disconnect the hose, will it shut off or stay on. If it stays on then there is a clog either in the hose, wands, or the inlet down by the brush roll. If it goes off, and there is no reset by the Hepa filter, then there could be a problem with the motor or motor protector.

The motor filter should be located behind the bag. I assume you can open the bag compartment to change the bag, so check behind the bag for a removable filter. They usually can be washed and re-installed once dry. That filter would have to be really plugged to affect the machine the way you describe, so I suspect that the hose or tools may be plugged. Check for any obstruction in the hose or wands and tools.

I think your next course of action is to make sure the vac is clean and properly assembled, take the hose off and run it and feel the suction at the opening. If the suction is good, let it run for a while and see if the thing shuts off. You don't say how long it runs before it shuts off, so let it run for at least that long and see if it shuts off. If it runs o.k., then attach the hose and listen to the motor. If it starts to race, your hose is compromised. Check the suction at the end of the hose, too. Let it run for a while again. If it continues to run o.k., attach the wands and feel the suction at the end of the wand. If that's o.k., attach the floor tool. Always listen to the motor. If at any time it starts to race, that indicates a blockage.

It is possible that the Hi-limit switch is over reacting. This switch will shut the motor down if it overheats and sometimes they react too soon. It is usually located beside or behind the motor in the exhaust air stream. If everything checks out, then this switch may be the problem. It is also possible that the fans are blocked, but this will usually be indicated by poor suction. I hope this all helps but if you can't find the problem, then take the machine to someone with experience and let them have a look. In my shop we do not charge for diagnosing problems, only to repair. Any good tech can find problems very quickly and most reputable shops will not charge to find out where the trouble is. Good luck.

Turns on and then shuts off

there is a self reseting thermal cut out sensing motor temperature. The motor is overheating due to lack of ventilation, probably obstructed by dust and stuff. Vac needs to be taken apart and cleaned to make sure.

Powerhead on vacuum shuts off after about 5-10 seconds of use. What is cause?

There are several possibilities, some of which you seem to have already checked.
1) The filters are clogged. System will cut out quickly if there is little or no airflow, to prevent overheating.
2) There is a clog somewhere besides the filter. Run through the checking for clogs steps in the manual, page 6. (
https://www.dyson.com/parts/u/user-guide/medialibrary/9118C278B029492DA662A45A70F187B0.ashx )
3) There is a small, Hall-Effect sensor near the filter that detects that the filter is in place and seated properly. If it is faulty, or the filter ISN'T seated properly, it cuts the power. Replacing that is beyond the scope of what I can safely advise on.
4) There are temperature sensors for the unit. If it's too cold, or too hot, no power. Too hot means the system thinks the battery is overheating, which can be dangerous. If the temp sensor is bad, that could do it too. This is also past what I can really help you on.

Good Luck!

Possible problem with thermal indicator?

Remove all filters and the dust bin and leave the vacuum motor run for a while. If it does not shut off it may mean your filters are clogged and need replaced. Even washable filters should be replaced frequently because they become clogged and restrict the airflow. You can't always tell if a filter is clogged by looking at it.

If it shuts off after being used for a whirl and won't come back on for a while it is probably overheating. The heat sensor shuts the machine off and won't let it turn back on until it cools down. If this is the issue it could be the filters are clogged and not allowing enough airflow to keep the motor cool. Most bag less vacuum filters should be replaced frequently even if they are cleaned regularly.

The vacuum shuts off after running for 10 or so minutes even after cleaning the filter, I have the purple animal

The vacuum shuts off because it is overheating. That almost always means there's a blockage somewhere. Follow instructions in the user manual (download from Dyson website if you don't have one) for removing blockages and you should be back in business.

Where does the hepa filter go

Look for a removeable grille at the top or back of the vac shaped similar to the filtter. The filter is an after filter so it sits beyond the bag

You have a plugged vacuum indicator port. There will be a tiny hole somewhere near the hose inlet. Just clean it with a dry toothbrush. This will allow the vacuum pressure to equalize on either side of the shut off switch.
