push down the button to open the lid, keep it pressed down. right next to it it a tiny button that detects whether the lid is shut. tape a little piece of folded paper onto it and then it thinks the lid is always shut. it just means you have to switch it off to remove the CD
either have to delete the short tracks from playlist to burn...when i get mssg theres usually nothing there (hit new track 2x by accident, just silence) Or if u want what is on the short tracks, have to join it to longer track b4 or after it, making one longer track, and no more 1 sec track...to do: hold playlist edit and delete track button, will ask if want to join two tracks, say yes and its done...When u do this, the track you do this on will b joined to the previous track, it will give u mssg showing which two tracks about to join and what track name will b left...(for example do u want to join track 01 to track 02...resulting track name will b track 02)..can then burn once all short tracks either deleted or joined to larger tracks...
dirty laser, give it a clean with an Isopropynol alcohol (cassette head cleaner) moistened cotton bud, with very gentle, light pressure circular motion. If that fails then I would suggest getting a replacement laser pickup for it. CD cleaner discs may work, they don't do a very good job and can end up scratching the laser. Make sure the unit is unplugged BEFORE removing the case lid to gain access and also be very very careful not to knock the timing out on the tray. you may find it easier to eject the disc tray first, unplug and then remove the lid if it allows with draw open otherwise whilst unplugged push the tray in slowly so that it is not fully engaged, that way you will be able to slide it out again without screwing the timing up when the lid is off.
The grinding could be the laser trying to read, so you could try a CD/DVD cleaner product> It also could be the laser is off track or damaged and you would need to have it repaired or buy a new player.
In the lid should be a mgnetic plate that holds the disc to the motor spindle (much like slight pressure would). Inspect it to make sure it's free moving and seating all the way when the lid is closed. I had one unit where the spindle on the motor shaft had slid down slightly causing the magnetic plate to not seat down all the way. Also, if the magnetic plate is removable, try placing it on the disc with the lid open and bypassed and see what happens.
