Can't open Dishwasher door

Hi, The handle mechinism to open the dishwasher has come loose and I can't open the door. I believe the spring either needs to be reconnected or replaced, but to do that I need to get into the dishwasher. Is there another way to open the door?

I've had this happen three times to my dishwasher in that last five years.

The plastic front handle has a little tab that breaks off very easily. This tab holds the spring mechanism. I have a KUDS24SE (not sure what the difference the "R" makes). The handle replacement part is 9743904 on my dishwasher, about $30.

I watched the repairman do it enough where I'm going to attempt it myself next time. The basic steps are to remove the front bezels, then stick a screwdriver up near the handle to gently pry open the metal latch mechanism and open the dishwasher. This part is really tricky, the repair guys struggle with it too. Once you have the dishwasher open, you remove the screws holding on the button/electronics. You'll also have to remove the circuit board to get access to the handle. When you do this, you should also be careful not to lose the small spring, and find the plastic piece that broke off so it doesn't get caught in your dishwasher. Put the new handle it, attach the spring to the handle and the latch, and then put the circuit board back in place. Test it to make sure it opens properly (you'll probably have to screw back in the button panel with a couple of screws first). Then put everything back together.

Now, that said, I haven't actually done this myself yet! I only watched! I had an appliance guy replace the handle this morning so this is fairly fresh in my head.

SOURCE: dishwasher door latch

I just had this problem (or should I say, finally had the time to deal with it). Google searches revealed different ways to get the door open including repairmen with crowbars (causing replacement of the entire control assembly $$$), having to back out the top screws that hold the dishwasher in place (and to the top of the counter) with pliers, then moving the dishwasher out from the counter.

Nuts to all that.

First things first. Turn OFF the power to the dishwasher.

I wound up on my back first watching how the handle moved and which side seemed to be loose, in my case the right side was moving freely. After first trying to hold the handle in the "down" position with a springhook (to no avail) I wound up biasing the handle to the right (with a screwdriver inserted on the left side of the handle) while moving the handle in the "operate" direction. Suddenly (and without warning) the entire handle assembly moved to the right and created an opening that made it simple to stick a screwdriver up to operate the latch manually.

Four screws later the control panel was out, the offending broken handle assembly was in my hands to discover that they could have easily made the little tabs the hold the handle in place a whole lot sturdier, but let's not go there...

If I had to do the whole thing again it would have taken me less than 5 minutes to open it up I'm sure. Now to simply order the part and install it when it arrives. The best part is we can still run the dishwasher until it gets here!

SOURCE: Dishwasher door won't open, latch seems broken

Hello, I read your comment. If the latch is broken, then I suggest first of all disconect the electricity from the dishwasher. You may want to try using a small screwdriver and insert it where the latch is to activate the opening mechanism. If it doesnt open, then there are two options, I suggest to call the technical service to replace the door with a new latch.

Hope I have been of help.

Regards Nevd ´ll fixya.

I just purchased a Kenmore dishwasher model 665.1303 and the door will not close. It seems like the mechinism on the door is locked not allowing the latch on the dishwasher to ingage in the lock on the...

Yes, that can happen. That latch is like the latch on your car door. You can trigger it, and then you can't close the door. But on your car, you can reset the latch by pulling the handle; your dishwasher doesn't have a handle, But you might be able to get a thin screwdriver in the latch and pry it back open. But I have found that once this happens, it tends to happen again. The best thing to do is replace the latch. If it's still under warranty, call Sears and arrange for them to send out a service man to fix it.

PDW8100 Dishwasher went through cycle several times, but I am unable to open the door. Is there a way to get it open? Thanks, Barbara

Hi,

When your dishwasher door has a problem, check these:

Latch
Springs
Hinges
Door seal
Latch The latch on many dishwashers is adjustable. If your door is easy to close but difficult to latch, adjust the latch to let the door close more easily. If you can't see any way to adjust the latch, yours may be fixed in a certain position. Check for other reasons for the latching problem.

If the latch has worn out in a way that makes it impossible for you to close the door properly, you probably need to replace the latch.

Springs Your dishwasher has two springs that counterbalance the weight of the door. If either or both of these are broken, the door feels quite heavy and you need to replace both springs.

Hinges The hinges are important to the door closing properly. If they're bent or deformed, you probably need to replace them. Once bent, only rarely can they be straightened well enough.

Door seal If your dishwasher is new--or if you have just replaced a door seal--the door may be difficult to latch for a week or two. If the tightness persists, though, try adjusting the latch, if it's adjustable. If it's not adjustable, there's probably nothing you can do immediately. But try running the dishwasher on the highest heat cycle to help the seal conform to the door. Otherwise, the seal should compress over time.

Goodluck..

How to install new door spring on portable dishwasher

Things You'll Need:
  • Owner's manual
  • Screwdriver
  • Replacement spring (optional)
  1. Turn off the power to your Kenmore dishwasher before attempting any repairs. If you have a portable Kenmore dishwasher, you can just unplug the power cord from the wall. Built-in dishwashers are hard-wired into the cabinet, so you will have to turn off the breaker switch at the home's circuit breaker box to cut the power.
  2. 2 Remove the screws that hold the kickplate onto the lower front of the Kenmore dishwasher. Take the kickplate off to access the door springs.
  3. Check the door springs to make sure they have not come loose from the door support or the adjustment holes on the dishwasher. Re-attach any ends that have slipped off their connections.
  4. Replace the springs if they are connected at both ends but still do not have enough tension to support the weight of the door. Once a Kenmore dishwasher door spring is stretched out, it cannot be restored to its original condition. Unhook one end of the old spring from the adjustment hole. Unhook the other end from the door support and discard the spring. Insert one end of the replacement spring into the adjustment hole and the other end into the hook on the door support.
  5. Open and close the door a few times to make sure the spring is now working properly. The door should not bounce up and down or sag on the hinges when it is in the open position.
  6. Restore power to your Kenmore dishwasher by plugging it back in or turning on the switch at the home's circuit breaker panel.

THE DOOR IS HEAVEY AND I FOUND STEEL WIRE LOOSE BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO PUT IT

Your door spring assembly has apparently broken or become dislodged. The springs go on each side of the dishwasher. You will more than likely need to pull the dishwasher out from its opening to install the springs. One or both of the springs may be dislodged.

The handle on my Maytag Quiet series 100

I had the same problem with my QS 100. I disconnected power first via the breaker then removed the 11 screws. I couldn't loosen the two electrical connections, but the door pulled far enough away to inspect the handle mechanism. The plastic handle fell out of whole handle assembly rather easily because two molded plastic pins protuding from either side had broken off and were loose inside. There was also a pair of molded plastic v-shaped forks right on the panel to hold the handle assembly and these were damaged but they just to seem to act as guides only (as the handle assembly is held in by two of the screws that were removed). Replacing the v-shaped forks would require a whole new door which I am NOT doing. It looks like I can a replacement handle in the same color with new pins (I am reading they may now be metal) for about ##15. Pretty easy to disassemble and inspect, only about 15 minutes.

Bosch Dishwasher

Hi ED, It sounds like a real problem here. If the springs are still in one piece, my best guess is to to remove the springs from the door. Then attach the springs to the dishwasher body first, then reattach the spring to the door. Not an easy job, good luck. If you have further problems check with www.repairclinic.com, as the repairguru there may be of more help.
