Question about Hard Drives

Hard drive collapse

I have a La Cie 160 gb external hard drive which I have been using as a back-up. Suddenly it won't light, nor will its icon appear on the desktop.
T 6552LL/A I take it is a model-number? The serial number is: 134103894.
Is there any way to resuscitate this unit? I hate the idea of losing all the files that are on it. Is there any way to recover the files if the product cannot be repaired? My email address is:

djkoury17@comcast.net

Thank you.

Hi,

try this:

1.From the Finder contextual menu, on the Finder Menu Bar, select Preferences.
In the window that opens, click on General.
Under Show these items on the Desktop:, make sure that Hard disks is checked

2.In the Finder Preferences, try de-selecting then re-selecting the Hard Disks box to leave it in the on state.
If that does not make it reappear, then try a Restart.

Goodluck,

Try to pull out the hard drive from the casing and replce it with a standard casing which you can purchase it in the market. once you pull out the hard drive try to check if there is a connetion that hasbeen disconnected. try to put it back.

The most likely cause if it has an external power supply is that the supply has stopped working. If it hasn't got one or if testing the PSU shows that it's still working then it's likely that the electronics in the box have packed up. If that's the case, then you can remove the drive from the box and try connecting it directly to a computer using a spare IDE or SATA connector. If doing that shows that the drive is still OK, then simply buy another external box and put the drive in that.

I would first check that the AC Adapter is providing power to the drive with a multimeter, if not then get a universal adapter and set it to the same output voltage. If the adapter is giving power then I would also try the drive on another computer, if it works then you might have a usb driver issue on your computer.

If none of that works then your best bet is to open the LaCie up and remove it's hard disk. You could then connect the disk as a secondary disk in any computer and read the files. It might be that the controller board in the external enclosure is faulty but the drive is still good. If this works then you can get a new external enclosure without a disk for faily cheap these days and put the drive into it, or leave it in your computer.

Hello,
your drive has failed at either the power supply level or internal hard drive level.
First, please verify your power supply. When plugged into the power outlet, it should be silent. A defective power supply will hiss or have a high pitch noise to it. If it is defective, replace it and check if the issue is resolved.
If the power supply is silent, one or both of the internal hard drive is failing. If no data is needed, you can either replace the defective one which you will have to isolate by connecting the internal hard drives to a computer or with another enclosure and running a block scan software like hdTune which is free to download. The other option would be to scavenge the healthy drive and use it in another enclosure or inside the computer directly.
If you need the data and the problem was not the power supply, you will need to contact a data recovery center.
Regards,

La Cie (500 GB) icon not showing up on desktop

If you are having trouble with the drive it is possible that the USB controller on the drive failed but the drive its self should be fine.

I would try the drive on another computer to see if it detects properly. Sometimes if the drive gets stopped improperly this can cause detection propblems but connecting it to another computer will force a scan of the drive that will repair any corrupted files that may be on the drive. Also check to see if the drive shows in disk management. The links below will show you how to check this.

If the drive does not show up in disk management and the drive is not in warranty I would recommend opening the drive and connecting it directly to your computer to access the data.

I have an old La Cie 160gb (maybe 5 years old?) - do you know the specs? rpm, for instance? I need something with 7200. This old one must be 5400, right?

Lacie drives have a 5400 RPM on there 160GB line nothing really changed until 500 GB to 1tB at 7200 RPM.

so the answer is 5400 RPM

Hope this helps please do rate and leave feedback.

This is most probably a faulty power cable, a common fault on La Cie apparently. Another cable got my disk working fine!

Hard drive won't turn on

You could remove the drive if you can get the enclosure open and either install it in a new enclosure or as an additional HD inside your Pc. Good Luck.
