Question about RCA P52937 52" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

RCA P52937SG Convergence

I have a RCA P52937SG that is having a convergence problem (from what I have read online). All edges are bowed in, and I cannot align red/green/blue. In the menu selection for "green centering", the green line is at the bottom of the screen and curved (due to the bowing).

I live in a rural area and am looking at having to pay well above standard rates to get this repaired (due to the distance from repair shops). I have found instructions on the web to do this yourself for other models, but not mine. I believe I can do this myself with proper instructions, as I have been a computer technician for many years.

Can anyone help me become a TV tech as well by giving some instructions? I have already had the TV apart once, but really just to take a look around and see if I could find any obvious problems!

Thanks!

Thanks ctf1800, I saw some of these same links on another solution you posted, however, I took it apart again tonight and I can't for the life of me find the convergence board or IC chips! Any clue as to where they are located on this TV?

    Thanks again!

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Your set uses the 195 series chassis, which has separate components for each of the 6 convergence channels and a separate power supply for the convergence circuits. If all 3 colors have drastically shifted, especially around the edges, then chances are your convergence power supply has stopped working. This is usually caused by the failure of the STK730-010 switching IC. If one of the colors has dramatically shifted by itself then something has stopped working on the convergence board. Sometimes I see CRT coolant leaking onto the convergence board as the cause. In either case this is something that should be repaired and realigned by someone experienced with RCA projection TV convergence circuits.

Bow tie looking picture with 3d color mis-alignment

you have lost convergence. First thing to check is to see if you are missing the convergence option in the customer setup menu. if you do not have this option then i suggest reading the article in the tips and tricks section entiltled "the fl231 fuse problem" this is a common and sometime easy repair if you do have it then you might need a convergence power board

Mar 09, 2009 | RCA R52WH73 Projection Television

1 Answer

RCA model P61950

fl231 is the convergence fuse, and is soldered to the board in proximity of the convergence ICS, on RCA rear projection TVs.

If
fl231 has blown, TV usually does not turn on at al, if you get bowed picture, that means that the convergence ICs must be replaced.

The fuse is on the same board where you find convergence ICs, if the fuse had blown, or the pico fuses at the base of the STK convergence ics had blown, the STKs must be replaced.
There is need of purchasing the service manual to do the job.

The repair shuld be done by a technician.

This is the convergence IC, model may vary:

Convergence problem

Yes, this is a convergence problem.

If it is going in and out or showing different symptoms from time to time, I am suspecting you have an intermittent problem as well.... Have you done the whacking test? Whack the set with your hand or fist; smack it a good one on the side, top, back, etc., to see if you can restore the picture. If the picture will restore - even if only for a few seconds, then you have a loose connection or a cold solder joint lurking inside somewhere. It may still be the convergence board or somewhere else that is effecting the color resolution lines; or you could have two problems: A) convergence board failure and B) intermittent condition from a cold solder joint either in the convergence board or elsewhere.

If you replace the convergence board be prepared to shell out some serious money. Usuall cost is around $150 to $400 depending on the unit and the labor and the other parts that may need replacing.

I, personally, don't like RCA brands because I believe they are not too reliable. So, if you repair it there is a high satistical probability that something else will go down soon thereafter. RCA in particular are prone to MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) that catch up with it soon.

If you call a repair shop that is well trained in RCA big screens and describe the problem I think they can give you an easy estimation of what will be needed and how much it will cost.

goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate me as fixya..
