Follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.
NOTE: Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the device status after completing each step.

  1. The NO DATA or FORMAT ERROR message may occur if the portable player has been formatted using the format utility in Windows Explorer. To correct this issue, format the portable player using the format utility built into the Network Walkman® player.
  2. Disconnect the power source for 30 seconds.
  3. If using AC power, verify that the adapter is securely connected and plugged into a working outlet.
  4. If the unit does not work after the 30 seconds, remove the power source for 30 minutes.
NOTE: If the issue is still unresolved after completing all of the troubleshooting steps, service will be required .

Try voidMP3FM from www.drvoid.com I have a NW-E005 but the web site says the program supports the NW-E002 as well. Have used this program from day one and have never loaded sonic stage. Heard lots of complaints about it. Hope this helps.

If you are using the Sony Sonic Stage software, then it might be
a good idea to just format the MP3 player and start over downloading music to it. You have to use the Sony Sonic Stage software or else it gives you the NO DATA BASE error, even if
you have music on it.

SOURCE: says no data

Make sure that you have transferred songs with SonicStage and not any other software. If you used a software other than SonicStage, format the WALKMAN with the menu itself and transfer songs with SonicStage.Get SonicStage from link below:http://download.cnet.com/Sony-Connect-SonicStage/3000-2141_4-10375164.htmlALI.DEHBAN

My Sony Walkman nw-e002 is showing an error "Format error"

It is caused by the music file you are trying to play. Play it on the computer to see if it works, then check the properties see if it meets the nw-e002's spec. If it does, your file maybe corrupted
