Question about Computers & Internet

Computer running very slowly

My computer is running extremely slowly. It takes at least half an hour to boot when I turn it on. I have been able to bring up Systems Mechanic and it took a day to defrag. Defragging is done on a routine basis so that shouldn't have been a problem. It scanned and found 3 problems which it fixed, but it's still very slow. When it starts analyzing the system the computer freezes. What can I do?

In case you're wondering this is being posted from my son's laptop.

This is likely due to the problems caused by the damages to system files.

the damages may be caused by the virus or other problems.

I suggest you first run the virus scan and see the result.

If there is no positive results at all, you better send the notebook to the repair shop.

Tell me, for any changes.

How do I fix "Optiplex 760 failed at checkpoint [WRIT]" ?

This computer has known issues with the USB hubs which will throw this code. If you used a USB hub for a monitor or such it may have crashed the driver. Have you tried booting without any USB devices connected? If not please try.

My computer will not boot up. it says AHCI bios not installed. it is a dell 530 s inspiron can anyone help please. it also doesn't show to have cd rom but added A drive which it does not have it wont boot...

This can happen on some models. Turn the computer off and unplug the tower. Press the power button to discharge any stored power. Plug it back in and press the power button. You will probably get this message again but let the computer sit. Windows may be working in the background trying to start back up. Let it go for like a half hour to an hour. If it does not start you may have to do a system restore or a repair install to make windows start correctly again. If waiting longer does not work for you then let us know and I can give you instructions on how to continue the repair process.
Hope this helps... Dale

Chkdsk runs for 24 hours and never finishes. How can I fix my hard drive? My computer is running very slow. I use System Mechanic Professional to check my computer and it wants to perform a chkdsk the next...

The time that the 4th level takes is completely dependent upon the SIZE of the disk. That level is a datacheck. Each block of the drive is checked. If you have a 300GB drive, that will take some time as each block is read/written/read a number of times.

Is there a specific issue you are trying to address or is this a preventitive measure?

Did a recovery but computers still running slow. I would like to try a reinsall what do I got to do. to preform this. HP Pavilion Media Center a1600n

Running slowly could be a lot of things. It could be you don't have enough physical memory (RAM) in your computer to do what you want. Less than 1 or 2 GB might be seen as slow. If you really want to reinstall Windows, back up all the files you want to save to someplace else, like an external hard drive or thumb drive. You will have to reinstall all your programs (Office, etc) after you reinstall Windows. Take the CD copy of Windows that came with your computer and boot your computer to that. You may have to change the boot order by entering Setup (usually by pressing F2 when it starts). Make sure the CD drive is first in Boot Order. When you boot to the CD follow the instructions for installing Windows in the screens which follow. Delete any existing partitions and install it on a clean partition.
Good luck!

Sr 1430 start up problem, during boot up, a screen comes up wanting me to press f2 to boot computor

Is it throwing up a 'disk read' or 'no physical drive installed' error?

In most cases, a boot error in bios (the pre-installed program a computer uses prior to loading an operating system such as Windows, Linux or Mac OSX) usually points to:

- disconnected cables running from the board to the hard drive(s)
- malfunctioning ports (IDE ports especially)
- dead or dying hard drive(s)

Open the case (if you don't mind voiding a warranty that you may still have) and check the cables that run from your drive(s) to the board and from the power supply to the hard drive(s) to ensure that the cables are firmly attached at all ends.

If so, the best way to test a hard drive without spending at least $100.00 for diagnostics is to install it(or them) into another computer and boot. If that computer boots with your drive(s), the problem may be on the board or with the PSU (power supply unit). In either case, you'll probably be looking at anywhere between $100.00 and $200.00 to replace.

Before you do anything, though, there's a button battery attached to the board; remove that for about a half hour, reattach it then try to boot. Sometimes this can clear up boot issues.

If the hard drive has died, DO NOT dispose of it. Most people think that their data is lost in the death of a drive and that's not true. Take it to a professional 'computer guy' and have the data extracted and saved to a new drive. The cost should be around $100.00 for data recovery... no more than that unless a new drive is part of the deal.

Buy the XP UPGRADE. It is around $90 and you can find it just about anywhere thjat sells software. You need at least 512 of memory for it to run smoothly. Once you install the upgrade ME will be gone.
