Question about Husqvarna Viking 1

1 Answer

Needle won't change position

My viking #1 is about 15 years old. A week ago the needle seemed stuck in the center straight stitch position. I fiddled with all the controls and it started to work again, so I thought maybe a button got stuck.

But it happened again, and there are no stuck buttons and nothing I do gets it to change. None of the computerized buttons work. I will only do the one stitch.

I had to have the foot pedal fixed last year and wonder if this machine is just on its last leg. I don't want to put a lot of money into it if it is going to need fixed frequently.

I think this sounds like a computer issue with the machine-but if it is mechanical-I may be able to fix it. However, I have no idea where to start.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have the EXACT same problem. What will NOT work is 1) replace zig-zag motor and 2) replace main computer board. The side-to-side motion worked for awhile after each fix, then randomly stopped working for no rhyme or reason. I am thinking of giving up and buying a new machine as this seems like an unsolvable problem and I gotta make buttonholes soon!

I paid $50 to have the repair man tell me the stop motor is bad. Viking no longer makes the replacement, so he would have to rig up replacement parts and of course no warranty. This would cost over $500. I decided to put that $500 towards another machine.

MMMM got me foxed, will look into it and see if I can come up with a this space. Only comment I can make is computer controlled machines can be a nightmare, old mechanicals are easier to fix and cheaper.

As far as I can find out Viking no longer produce specialist spares for this machine. Most of the mechanical parts needle bars, feed dogs, some gears etc are generic and still available. The problem you are having is as you(pbl4himp) is as you have already been told a motor problem.

Yours(thedrsma)sounds like the same, while fixable, if the spares can be found, will prove to be very expensive plus you have to find someone fairly local who can do it.

My suggestion(for what it is worth) cut your losses and put the repair money towards a new machine.

    Sorry best I can do.

Well, I haven't used a Pfaff sewing machine, but I'll answer from my general experience with sewing machines.
If the upper thread is too tight, the force on the needle will bend the needle a bit. As a result, the needle will come down on the pressure foot.
Try loosening the upper thread.

How do I adjust the needle position for straight sewing?

The stitch Width selection regulates straight-stitch or zig-zag width. Needle position does not determine straight or zig-zag. Needle position just determines whether the needle's home position is center, left, or right. Needle position can be used with straight or zig-zag stitching.

How do I center the needle on a Viking 6430; there is no eccentric adjustment on the needle bar frame on this model.

Am having difficulty finding information on this machine.

Perhaps this machine is a left-needle position machine, ie the normal straight stitch sewing position is on the left, not centered. There are quite a few machines out there with this feature, Necchi is another. The needle only swings right when a decorative or zig-zag stitch is selected.

Stitches and Seams Review Viking 6010 Sewing Machine (See #3 under Dislikes.)

If it is actually a center-needle position machine, it is probably out of alignment. There is most likely an adjustment. For more help, you can also join some Viking user groups on Yahoo. Most members are very dedicated to the brand and would be able to provide some very helpful advice.

How do I set the dials on husqvarna viking 6000 sewing machine

The "dial" in the back is for decorative stitches which require a "programmer" to be inserted with the stitch formation you want to form. For a straight stitch no cam is required in the back of the machine. The three dials on the front:

Upper Left: Stitch selector
Upper Right: Stitch lenght
Lower: Stitch width

Using the upper left dial select the straight stitch picture
Using the upper right, choose your stitch lenght
Using the lower, choose your needle position, left/center/right

Needle position

First, select straight stitch on your pattern selector. Check your zigzag setting to see that it is on zero.If this doesn't help, push the needle bar to the left and see if it will move. It's possible the assembly is seized and won't move the way it is supposed to.
Next, try the widest zigzag stitch. If you only get a straight stitch it is time for a service.
