Hello,

First thing to check would be your air filters make sure not blocked as this will act as the choke if blocked and will flood the engine,

If all is well remove plug and remove as much excess fuel as possible with compressed air etc, then reassemble and see if it will fire,(With full throttle and NO CHOKE) you may have to repeat this a couple of times...

Once you get the engine to fire it may geep running if the engine was just flooded otherwise if the engine floods again then you will most likely have a problem in your carby mabie a piece of rubbish under the needle valve holding it open causing the engine to flood and the carby will have to be cleaned and tank flushed

Good luck with it hope this helps!!!!

Kind regards
Brad

Seems my Poulan Chainsaw P3314 is flooding.

Ron, the excessive gas could be the result of continued start attempts with a weak spark or a bad plug or a carboned plug. If none of the carb adjustments have not been turned or twisted prior, I'd suggest obtaining a fresh spark plug. Make sure the gap is correct. Blow out the cylinder with compressed air to vent all the residual gas/oil within. Ground the new plug against the engine and pull the cord. You should observe a fairly bright spark at the plug. If no spark you could have a faulty coil/ignition module. If a bright spark is present, install the plug and give it full choke and attempt to start. It should attempt to start within a few pulls....when it does, go immediately to HALF-choke and pull again and it should start.

Toro GTS 20332 lawnmower won't start. It's guaranteed to start. Bought it last November. Just put new gas in it, checked the oil, went to pull it and it didn't even sound like it was trying to start..

Hi, well, if it hasn't been started since November? then maybe, the spark plug has fouled, change, DO NOT clean and replace unless you have NO alternative. Also check, the spark plug lead. Replace if possible with a new one. Check all connections, to magneto/alternator, make sure you have voltage? Check the ignition circuit, the electronic ignition module too. Then Check to see if you indeed have a spark, hold the plug, against the case of the motor, and see if you can discern a spark, it should be big, and nice and blue.purple.
Also ensure gas is getting to the carburettor, take the fuel line Off at the carb, and see if gas is flowing?
I would imagine though you have sufficient gas.
If it uses a battery, then make sure this is OK too.

Car tries starting but wont turn over. Battery seems to be good. Starter is trying to turn it over but its almost as if there is no gas. What could it be other than fuel pump/fuel filter?

are you getting spark?
pull off a spark plug ground the bottom connect the spark plug wire have (make sure you aren't holding the spark plug) have someone turn over the motor you should see a spark. if you don't have spark check the ignition system.

My motor will not start?? It gets spark, I see the piston fire, Is it out of time. seems like there is too much gas. How would I check for timing. Or other problem. Mike [email protected] thanks...

has it been sitting for a long time? 9 times out of 10 the carburetor is dirty and just needs to be cleaned. you could soak it in some carb cleaner sold by auto parts stores or go so far as to buy a rebuild kit for it and replace gaskets and such.

You may need to use a jumper wire between the threaded part of the plug and the cooling fins. You do not have to bend up the electrode. HTH

WONT START

Not so many reasons she won't start. 4-Strokes are Simple!

Here they are:

Motor:
Fuel Tank-> Fuel Line-> Fuel Filter-> Carb-> Intake (Valve)-> Piston-> Exhaust (Valve)-> Muffler

Carb (Old Style):
Fuel Side:
Fuel Bowl-> Float-> Needle Seat-> Fuel Ports (Venturi)
Air Side:
Air Filter-> Carb Air Intake-> Butterflies (2)
(Clean 'em ALL!)

Hardware (Motor):
Rotor (Magnets)-> Magneto (Ignition Coil)-> Spark Plug Wire-> Spark Plug-> Cylinder Head (Spark Plug Ground)

Ignition:
Kill Switches (Seat, Clutch, etc.)-> Spark Plug/Ignition Coil-> Ground
Key Ignition-> Battery->Starter/Generator

If one of those fail.......= Non-Starting 4-Stroke!

Fixes-
Fuel:
You are either getting too much, or too little. Too much = Carb.
Too little = Carb. Therefore, tear down the Carb (COMPLETELY-Careful!) and clean it up.

Electrical:
Grounding out the System (Kill Switches)
Battery-> Ignition-> Starter.
Magneto->Plug Wire->Plug (Check 'em all!)

Hi,I have a evinrude 90hp 1998 motor and only recently had it serviced( 6 mnths ago).Its been going great guns ,starts easily but this morning it all turned to custard.The usual startup was fine and...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand your description "engine cut out" could only indicate two possibilities:
  • no fuel;
  • no spark.
Since you further described that the "bulge in the gas line had l...", then it can be assumed that there is fuel and it is getting to the motor. Assuming that this is the case, fuel present and reaching the engine, that would leave us with the spark.

A way of verifying spark presence in the plug(s) would be to remove one of the plugs, connect back the sparkplug wire and let it lay on any metal part of the engine, switch on and start. There should be a noticeable spark jumping on the electrode of the plug. If none, then the problem is narrowed down to the ignition system which could include the ignition coil, ignition module and the trigger pulse coil. Of the 3, most likelihood to be faulty would be the ignition module. Still, the coil could be tested with a continuity/VOM tester, same with the pulser. In some instances, it could just be the wire connected to the engine ON/OFF.

If there is spark, then we go back to fuel; is it reaching the combustion chamber at the right time and air/fuel mix.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.
