Question about Canon PIXMA iP4200 InkJet Photo Printer
I work mostly using black ink and I want to save the color inks so I want to set my printer iP4200 to print using black cartridge only. It seems that I can't access to this setting. How do I solve this?
"... I don't understand how colored inks are used to create black, but that's what they claim. Anyway.." It is the priciple of substractive color system, when you mix cyan, magenta, and yellow together you will obtain black. Of course it is not smart to use 3 colors to obtain black thats why printers have black cartridge but some printer drivers (perhaps to keep clean color side of print head) use ink colors even if you print a totally black item.
Some old canon printer driver like i560 have the option of use only black in printer properties

Have you tried Canons FAQ? They suggest checking the grayscale box, which apparently only works with certain kinds of printing (duplexing and borderless will still use colors). I don't understand how colored inks are used to create black, but that's what they claim. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=257&modelid=11641
