We have a Brother MFC 5840CN. Yellow ink is almost constantly near empty. We fill up at least once a week.

Be carefull!

It might be that the cart holder is defective:

the ink is beneath the holder and will stain your funiture!

You have to open the printer and have to replace the cart holder!

Take all carts out. Have a close look into the cart holder. If you have lost ink it will be beneath the cart holder! That might be because the cart holder leaks. You need a new cart holder then. You have to open the printers top cover, carefully take the holder out, clean the bottom of printer and replace the holder with a new one.

This happens sometimes because the glue which fastens the foil (this is the bottom of the holder!) lost its adhesivness.

New ink cartridge istallation: Brother MFC-240

I guess you d used generic ink carts?!
If yes, the cart holder needs replacement due to ink that has stained the led control. The ink has made a short circuit. The error can only be deleted by replacing the whole cart holder!

Ink problems....

Take all carts out of the machine. Have a look into the cart holder. Is there ink swapping beneath the white plastic? (You might shake the machine ;-)

If yes, the cart holder leaks and needs replacement.

If not (your lucky!) it could be that the automatic cleaning procedure which starts when a cart is changed has soaked the carts empty.

Do set machine with date and time and NEVER unplug NOR use a power switch which breaks the power supply.

Do use constant power and switch off machine by pressing stand-by-fax-button!

Everytime when machine comes to (new) power contact it runs an extensive ink cleaning procedure. thats why your carts are always near empty....
The stand-by will prevent this and machine does some cleaning procedures which consumes only a few drops(!) of ink!

The display asks you if you have changed the carts. Do answer this question by pressing 1 for YES or 2 for NO.
This will reset the built-in inkcountermanagement to the correct settings

Did you lock and secure the latches?

If yes and still this message, do you run generic ink carts?

If yes, the cart holder is stained with ink and the led-controll-board has a short circuit, which cant be fixed!

You need a new cart holder as a spare part!

Changing ink cartridge

Did you secure the latches when reinstalling the cart? You should hear a clicking sound.

If you had used generic carts before it might be that the cart led control circuit can be stained with splashed ink. This cant be fixed anymore. you need a new cart holder!

New refill but runs out of ink after about 8 pages

Did you stich into the ink inlet within the cart holder with a syringe for pressing some air into the tubes? Never do that! Because you have dissolve the bottom of the cart holder or drilled a hole into the bottom.

The cart holder leaks and the poured out ink has already stained the whole machine!

The bottom of the cart holder is a foil which has been sticked onto the hard plastic (clever , eh?). This also happens due to the use of  a wrong refill ink or wrong generic carts the wrong mixture dissolves the foil and ink runs out into the machine....

You need a new cart holder to fix that.

Color not print

Did you run a quality test print? Are all 4 color blocks in a pretty good condition or do you have other colors than the separat 4 ones?

If the colors are mingled you need a new cart holder because the bottom which consists of a foil is leaking and mingles the ink. The cart holder cant be fixed.

My MFC-210C always says replace ink.

Try this: Unplug machine from power. Wait 5 min.  Open scanner cover and take the carts out of the holder. Close cover. Plug machine to power. Machine will cycle and demands the carts. Use all NEW carts: Insert carts as demanded and answer question shown on display.

Always print until machine STOPPS printing because of EMPTY cart. Change cart then and machine will print the rest of job!
Plz, never change carts when it says NEAR EMPTY: This will cause a lot of trouble ;-)
