The sound in my sub comes in and out. The people who did the installation have assured me that all the wiring was done correctly. Now the one thing that could be causing the problem, they say, is my amp. How can I have service done on my amp or see if indeed that is the problem with my system.

Check all connections and fuses. Also make sure your speaker can handle the wattage being put toward the speakers and the OHM load. Try a different amp to see if the same problem happens. Sub sinking in when power put to it means you may have crossed the connections Positive and negative to the speaker. Triple check that your connections are correct and your using the correct wire for the job.
First disconnect the CD head unit from the sub amp and see if the other amp works. If yes, the problem is the wires to the amp, the amp itself, or the subs/sub wiring. If no, the problem is the head unit--probably an internal short. If the other amp works with the sub amp disconnected, reconnect the sub amp to the head unit, but disconnect the sub wires from the amp. Try the CD player. If the amp goes to protect with no speaker wires attached, the amp is bad. If the amp is OK, the problem is the subs or sub wires. Hook the wires up to the amp again, but disconnect them from the speakers. Try the player again. If the amp goes to protect, the problem is the amp wiring. If not, the problem is the subs. Check the impedance of each sub using an ohmmeter to determine which amp is out of spec. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using Fixya.
You have connected it to the wrong power wire - one that is only active in service mode - first key position.
You should draw a wire directly from the battery (don't forget to add a 40 amps fuse on the wire) to the amps. If you don't want them constantly operational (you will have to manually shut them down) install a relay on the wire with the command coming from a wire from the instrument key position - second position of the key. Use a voltmeter to identify the wires.
It depends if your sub is 4ohm svc, or 2ohm svc. 4ohm would take 4 subs wired in parallel, 2ohm would take 2 subs wired in parallel. But for a amp that big, subs that'll handle it are definitely gonna be dvc. I'd recommend 2 Orion 4ohm dvc hcca's. They come in either 15in or 12in. the 15s are louder if you have the space for them. As far as wiring goes, wire the voice coils on the subs in parallel to 2ohm per sub, then wire the 2 subs in parallel to 1ohm. Goodluck and congrats on the equipment, Orion is about as good as you can go for subs and amps. just be ready to lay down some dynamat cuz this system'll bloww your vehicle apart! good luck...
hey i had this happen to me, pull the deck out and move the rca cables to a different channel and see if that does not fix it. i blew out my sub pre out channel in my deck and had to use the rear pre outs. try this and let me know what you come up with. good luck
Is the amp being fed directly from the head unit's RCA preamp outputs or is it being fed by another amp's preamp outputs? Try temporarily wiring up a speaker you know is good in place of the sub and see if anything changes.
hi, have you figured out whats wrong with ur amp ...i have the same amp ....and as soon as i finished the connections ...and connect the remote on wire,,, the amp goes on ...making a ticking sound with the green light blinking and the red light staying solid on ...whats the problem please help ....how can i fix this ......my amp is a jl e6450 ....im using a panasonic cd player with a built in amp ....and thats the cd player im trying to connect to the jl amp ...please HELP
Buy an amp wiring kit. The battery cable goes to the battery (duh, right?) with the fuse within 18 inches of the battery. The ground gets bolted to a clean section of the car chassis/body. the remote lead goes to the radio's remote out (blue/white stripe). the rca cable goes to the radio's Sub/rear RCA outputs. Speaker wires go the speakers. Done!
