IBM Selectric used ribbon won't wind into spool

My boss (in his seventies!) uses an old Selectric typewriter, the model that uses correction tape. The used ribbon suddenly will not wind onto the spool on the right side of the cartridge. He asked me to take a look at it, because he can't figure out why it won't move. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but could not seem to get anything to move or even to remove the cartridge. The lever on the right side, which I presume allows the cartridge removal, does move easily back and forth. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem? Thanks!

The ribbon sometime gets wrapped around the ribbon driver,One lever on the right side only releases the lift off tape for removal the other is for ribbon removal, also check that the ribbon is on the outside of the ribbon tensioner where the ribbon exits the cartridge on the left side ( a wire thing with a plastic tube on it.

IBM Selectric II Ribbon Not Advancing

First check to be sure that the ribbon is on the left of the shock wire where it comes out of the cassette, if that is OK then check the ribbon driver it should move freely and swing to the ribbon take up spool. Some WD40 will free it up. Also be sire the ribbon is winding in the direction of the arrows.

Trying to replace the lift-off tape on an IBM Selectric III

Open the gray lever to the right on the carrier.this will release tension on the correcting tape. Now put the supply spool on the left side and bring the take up spool across in front of the card holder. There is a little black wire just right of the card holders opening that looks kind of like a bobby pin , this is the
separator between the ribbon and the correcting tape. The ribbon is in front toward you and the correcting tape is behind. Continue feeding the correcting tape to the take up wheel and take up the slack in the tape then close gray lever.

Changing typewriter ribbon in the IBM Selectric

You haven't told what model of Selectric. If it is a selectric II or III, there is an orange lever on the carrier that you must pull to one side. The correction tape has a silver lever next to the take-up spool that you must pull outward.

IBM Selectra III typewriter

There are two different ribbons for selectric III T/W's. One has the ribbon guides as part of the cassette the other the guides are part of the machine.
Be sure the ribbon and L/Oare installed properly and the ribbon is winding on the take up spool properly (counter clock wise) and if the guides are in the machine id to the left if thr white slacker finger just L. of the ribbon also be sure the L/O tape is behind the black seperation finger and the ribbon is in front of it (just to the rt. of the opening in the plastic card holder).

Correction tape problem IBM Selectric II

Take off the ribbon, just inside the rt. side frame of the printer is the mech. for L/O feeding. There is an arm that moves back and allows the feed to ****, that mech. is probably gummy, lube with some WD40 on both sides of the printer (the left side sets up correction lifting.
