Ok? hmm can you see the drive in "my computer?''

goto: start >control panel > admin.tools> device managment and look under the driver managment in the USB section there should be "usb external mybook HDD" or similar. if there is righ click it and in properties check that it is running fine and no conflicts...

if it is not there ir no problems appear. goto the disk managment further down on the left side and ur internal HDD and the book shold appear right click the book and select explore! if it does not let u that is because it was not assigned a drive letter or path tis is a driver error and a service or driver upgrade will correct.

now rightclick and select change drive letter/assign drive letter. then click add... then give it a letter.

try explore again it may say error. then try again it WILL let u in. but may jumb back to the "my computer page" just click the back button and it will appear.

good luck lamby.

Upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 ,now storage device not showing.

Have you tried to shut down the computer, unplug the usd external drive, reboot the computer, plug in the USB external HDD the should apply the driver. That said, Have you tried a Thumb Drive or any other USB device in the USB ports? It's a common problem when upgrading a OS that Hardware issues popup. Open the Device Manager, Is your USB controller working? Enabled? Any other devices in error? Unknown devices? Use the Win 7 drivers for your computer found on the computer manufacturer's website. Change the compatibility on the driver for Win 8.

My WD essential is not working, the light is still on but windows doesn't recognize the device. PLZ help

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

The wd is not being recognised on my laptop. It does not show up

Did the WD Hard drive come with a software driver installation package? What operating system are you using? If Windows, please check Windows "Device Manager" and verify if there are question marks next to the device when inserted into USB port. I would also recommend upgrading the firmware on this model:
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/Step1.asp?id=wdfMP_Essential&os=win

Have you verified that other USB-compatible devices work in the USB port that you are using? Have you tried inserting this device into another USB port? If you are using multiple USB ports for multiple devices, try removing all USB-compatible devices and then re-insert WD hard drive on its own.

Please email me your results at JDavis@csical.com. Thanks!

I have recently bought a Belkin N+ Wireless Modem-Router (model F5D8635-4 v1). It comes with the USB port and I bought a WD 1Tb drive to connect with it. I added the WD drive (92.168.2.1My Book in my...

  • First off, the WD hard drive was meant to be connected to a computer.
  • Therefore connect it to the fastest computer you have or the one running the network.
  • Make that drive a network drive.
  • Set the router to handle DHCP using the web based interface (192.168.1.1 on a linksys router, check your manual for the IP address belkin)
  • The drive apparently has three volumes on it: X: Y: and Z: (network drives)
  • I would backup the WD drive and reformat in NTFS format
  • I dont believe that these drives were meant to be networked. Therefore you get what you get....
Good Luck

WD My Book 1TB, not recognised by XP

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

A couple of ideas:
  • initially, confirm that it is the PC's USB ports that is the issue by trying the WD on another PC;
  • try plugging in a flashdrive, camera to your PC's USB port;
  • if it has been verified that the WD works in other PCs and that the USB port of your computer works, then it could be a registry entry.
Please open "regedit":
  • go to HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\USBstor;
  • check the value of the DWORD "Start" it should be 3;
  • If the DWORD "Start" does not exist, pls create it. Right click, New, DWORD value, Start, Value Data = 3.
Incidentally, there is Microsoft KB about disabled/disabling USB here.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

My book premium edition ii and windows vista

I am running 4 WD SATA drive internally on Vista Ultimate, and no problem. I have a simpletech USB 360gb external drive that I had not used after the VISTA install. After reading your problem, I hooked it up and turned it on, and it worked just fine. However, the computer forums are FULL of folks complaining about the My Book drives. WD site shows extra drivers for Win98 (as expected) and nothing for VISTA (would not think you would need one)

I would disconnect the MY BOOK. Get the PC running on its internal drives. Remove any MY BOOK drivers (they are likely for Win98). Reboot the PC. Connect the MY BOOK drive to a usb port and turn it on. If it doesn't come up as an external drive, I would think there was something wrong with it and contact Western Digital. You SHOULD NOT require VISTA drivers for any USB device. My warranty experience with WD has always been outstanding. Hope this helps

Win98se i did it ... HERE'S HOW

OK, I bought this Western Digital MyBook 500 GB Essential Edition too, and could not get it to work with Windows 98 SE.

I followed the above instructions, but my version of windows was missing even the drivers suggested above! UGH!

HOWEVER, I found ANOTHER SOLUTION. I installed USB 2.0 drivers for mass storage and the the MY BOOK icon popped up on my Windows 98 SE machine. Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

Here are the drivers from this british webpage:
http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php

Good luck to all you frustrated folks scooping your info off Windows 98 machines!
