I see you did not mention that you have a router. You will need a router to connect the laptop and XBOX at the same time. If you just want to connect the XBOX straight to the modem you can follow the instructions below.

If you are using a cable modem you just have to plug it in the modem then turn it off and on.
if you are using DSL then you have to setup the XBOX to connect via PPPoE that you can do via the network settings then put in your username and password

I had this problem not to long ago I suggest calling xbox live they helped ,e out but you need to go to account setting and system and follow instructions but I suggest calling xbox live 1800-4-my-xbox

First you need to have a Windows Live ID email address, you can link any email address to Windows Live so you don't need to create a new one.

Second, you need to get on your Xbox console and select connect to Xbox Live, follow the instructions and you should be good to go.

User is blank (left empty), admin is the password (when the Linksys is in default factory condition). Find MTU and change to manual and set to 1500 for broadband. Also, according to linksys, uPNP may not be compatible, so you may want to turn that off. Go to this link on Linksys to get a step-by-step setup for linksys routers and Xbox live. Also, pay special attention to section ii about upgrading your firmware to the latest version.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure if your having a technical issue or if you just need instructions explaining how to set up xbox live. Connecting Xbox 360 wireless controllers does not need Xbox live, you can follow the instructions here from the Microsoft Xbox website.

Be sure you have an internet connection hooked into the xbox. Also, if you cannot connect to Live due to connection problems, be sure to test the connection by going to MY XBOX, System Settings, Network settings.

I think someone plugged an internet cable into the back of your xbox or this cable was in there already but now started to work.
If you do not want xbox live disconnect the cable or maybe change the settings to not 'search for x box live'
If you want live make sure the cable is connected to the internet and follow the instructions in the manual.
