It has now been 24 hours and the door will still not open.
I did try to open it while it was still hot and the lever would not even return. But now that the lever has returned, it is still latched. It acts like it is almost free but I am afraid that if I pull any harder, I will break something.

    Anymore suggestions?

I have a GE Spectra electric oven model JBP82SF1SS. I tried running the self-clean. When I closed the door and press start, a flashing sign "locked door" appeared. I tried to cancel but the flashing sign remain and I cannot open door. I turned-off breaker and back on but the problem persist.

Hey there gcato1, your problem is actually a protective feature designed to prevent you from getting burned. The self cleaning feature runs at extremely hot temps. Until the temperature reaches a safe level, the oven door will remain latched. Be patient and the problem will solve itself.

Hey there gcato1, I will suggest that you unplug the unit and then plug it back in. It may reset the feature that has been keeping it locked. Good Luck!

Upon further investigation, it appears there is long metal arm extending from the back of the stove which has had some problems in the past with getting, stuck or unseating from motor drive. Apparently if you remove the back panel of the stove, you should be able to locate the small motor with an arm extending from it. The bad news is it is apparently quite difficult to rotate the arm and hence release the door. The cost of repair is substantial due to the replacement of the whole assembly, so self repair attempt may be worth a shot. Open the back. Take a look and see if you are up to it. Good Luck!

Try to turn the circuit breaker off to the home for about 10-15 minutes, then retry the unit. If the door does not unlatch then either the door latch assembly or main control board need to be replaced, since they are not communicating correctly. Consult a professional at that point to be safe.

The lock will not release after cleaning

This is GE's trouble shooting advise:

Range - Oven Door Won't Unlock After Self Clean

The Oven Door has been Locked Accidentally:

  • If no food or utensils are in oven, put it into a short self-clean cycle (1-2 hours).

  • If there is food in the oven, let the oven cool to room temperature and try to unlatch the door.

  • With electronic ranges there is a small chance that turning the circuit breaker off for a few minutes and turning it back on can release the door. latch to the "off"

  • Note: Do not force the latch at anytime!

Door Will Not Unlock After Cleaning:

On models with mechanical latches:
  • Once the oven is cool after a self-clean cycle (approximately 30-90 minutes), slide the latch over to the left.(Some older models have a latch release button that must be pushed in while sliding the latch over.)
Note: Some models with oven Set and Temperature knobs must have those knobs set in the Clean position before the latch can be moved to the left. If your door won't unlock, try turning those knobs back to Clean, then slide the latch over.

If the above suggestions do not work try the following to unlock your door:
  1. Disconnect power to range for 30 seconds.
  2. Reconnect power and see if door will unlatch.
  3. If door does not unlatch, and you do have food in the oven, wait for oven to cool completely and try again. If it still will not open you will need service.
  4. If door does not unlatch, and you do not have food in the oven, set the oven up to clean for 1-2 hours.
  5. Wait approximately 30 minutes and try to unlock the door.
  6. If the door unlocks, the control has reset itself and there should not be any other problems.
  7. If the door will not unlock or if you would like to schedule a service appointment, please contact GE Consumer Service at 1-800-432-2737 or schedule a service appointment on-line.
Note: Under no circumstances should you ever force the door or latch open.

Can not open the door of the self- cleaning electric Range after cleaning operation

Unplug the unit or shut off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes. Plug the unit back in or turn on the circuit breaker. Set the clock and gently try moving the door lock lever (is so equipped) or opening the door.
or
Set the self-clean cycle again and only allow it to work for 15 minutes. Cancel the self-clean cycle and allow the oven to cool. Gently try moving the door lock lever (is so equipped) or opening the door.
If these procedures fail to correct the condition, the lock must usually be accessed and moved manually to open the door.
Some model ovens require the oven door to be manually unlatched before the controls are returned to the OFF position or else the door may not be able to be unlocked. Check the owner's manual for proper operating procedures

By the way the door lock error will stay there until the oven cools. Once it has cooled it will go away. the reason is in a self clean the oven is supposed to get very hot to clean. The door lock is for your protection. once it has cooled down enough the door lock will go away.

Hello Friends Creek.
Welcome to Fixya
You said, you used the self cleaning selection on my Admiral Designer Series gas range. The oven went through the complete cycle of 3 hours. You then unlocked the door and was able to open the oven door no problem. Later on you went to use the oven, pushed the bake button and the lock light would flash. And you could not get past that to get the oven to come on.

You did the right thing to turn off the electricity and then turned it back on.
Did you wait 5 minutes before turning the power back on?Or just flick it off and on?
You said, the lock light still blinked.
But did it lockup again?

Please send me the model and year of your range.
