Reset my Compaq D51C PC Desktop BIOS

Hi. I was trying to boot from a cd but my keyboard didn't give me the chance to click any key when the message "press any key to boot from cd..." comes to my screen. The key board only works when i become inside the window.
So I tried to reset the BIOS by taking off the battery and the jumper PSWRD for some time.
Now I can't log to windows anymore. Everytime the computer starts it gives me an error message with the number 162 or 163 that says system time error.
Please i need your help as soon as possible.
Thank you.

Thank you sir for you fast reply.
First i can't find the file in the path you gave to me (both of them).
Second, if i get the file how can i boot from the cd ?
This was my main problem. I can't use the keyboard unless I am inside the window.
By the way , I tried changing the battery but it didn't work.
    Thanks again.

Dear devocap, i followed the steps you gave but if i keep pressing f10 as you mentioned in step 2 it gives me keyboard error.
the main problem as i think is the keyboard doesn't function well before the windows starts. because when i start my pc and get the 162 error, i get at the lower left corner : f1 to boot . so i press f1 but nothing happens, because the keyboard is not working and the numlock light is off. ( i tried another keyboard but still the same)
    thanks for your help.

Hey there mat-rix, the errors reported are configuration related. You can fix this problem by downloading a reference disk from IBM ftp.pc.ibm.com Here you can get pub/refdisks/rf5060a.dsk (this is the image file), and also get pub/utils/ldf.com to write image onto a diskette. Once you get the disk prepared, boot with it, and run setup. If the errors still occur, replace your battery with a new one. and try it all over again. Good Luck!

Hey mat-rix, sorry about the last link problem. Try resetting the bios to default. Step 1/ press and hold the power button for approx 5 sec to turn off the pc. Step 2/ Press and hold the F10 key, as you push the power button, to turn the pc on. Do not release the F10 key until the text appears on your screen. Step 3/ Once the bios setup information is displayed, press the F9 key, selecting setup defaults. Step 4/ press F10 key to save changes and exit . This should resolve the issue of the error. If not, then service will be required by a professional. Hope it helps. Good Luck!

Hey mat-rix, my next question would be; where are you plugging in the keyboard and is it directly or using an adapter to fit a particular port?. I would suggest that you try different ports, or usb slots. This is under the assumption that the keyboards you have tried are both basic and corded and thus plug and play. I have had keyboards that would only work with usb and would not function through an adapter attached to the keyboard slot. Hope it helps. Good Luck!

I want to get into the setup mode when booting, and the normal F2, F8, or F12 keys don't do anything. I want to boot from a cd....how do I achieve this?

its possible that the Function keys on the top of your keyboard aren't working.

Turn off the computer and disconnect the keyboard from the computer and then plug the keyboard back in.

If the keyboard function keys still aren't working then the keyboard needs to be replaced.

Just for your info, to boot up off the cd you would either go into the BIOS by pressing F10 or F11 on your keyboard and then change the boot sequence so that the CD Rom is the first boot device.

You can also press F12 to go into the boot menu and choose the cd-rom directly from there.

Hi, when i boot my Compaq Pressario 700ap i get a DOS screen the bottom line being that there is an "0211: Keyboard Error". I then have the option of using the 'F1' key to continue with the boot or 'F10'...

First, I would go into the BIOS by pressing the F10 or F2 key during boot. Then look on the BIOS screen for 'keyboard' and see if it is recognized in the BIOS.If it says "not present" then you need to ttoggle the TAB key or SPACEBAR to set the BIOS to recognize the keyboard.
There are other causes for your problem, but try this first.

When you boot your computer, you need to hit the key to get you into the bios setup. F10, F2 or Del keys are the usual ones.

Once into the bios, change the boot order to make the CD drive first, and then you will boot right to the CD.

Note, you will also have to hit a key when it starts to boot, it will say, hit a key to boot from CD.

If you miss the key to get into the bios, you have to start over again. Sometimes you have to hit the enter bios key over and over to get in there.

Compaq laptop/no boot up

Hi,

Initially it may be suspected that your laptop is detecting a hardware problem, probably the hard disk. Since it partially boots and there is display, the following can be ruled out: video card, memory and display systems. That would leave us the hard disk and the motherboard left. If the motherboard is in question, chances are it is the BIOS.

Pls try and verify that the hard disk is connected snugly. The hard drive is usually inside one of the slots covered by a panel/lid held by a single screw.

If your concern has not been corrected after completion of the above procedures, further diagnosis may be required.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FIXYA.
