Ibm thinkpad a31p 2654

The pcmcia slots are not seeing my d-link adapter when installed. also I get the error message "This device can perform faster; This USB Device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Port". I was told that this Thinkpad does not have USB 2.0 Ports, is this true and if so can they be upgraded.

What is a USB 2.0 that you are referring to. and Where do I get it.

Next question is the PCMCIA problem that I am having.

Hi i had the same problem when trying to use memory stick have you installed the software that came with the device.
When you get that message cancel it as its not important when your device is plugged goto my computer and see if it is listed their.
If it is select it then it should be working.
If it is not listed then plug your device in the goto add hardware wizard and let the comp search for hardware devices when this has finished then scroll down the list untill you see your hardware device then select this and if you have disk tick box if not let the comp search the net for the correct software and settings.
Doing this solved the problem for me.
Let me know how you get on and if you need further assistance

The Personal Computer Memory Card International Association is an international standards body that defines and promotes the PC Card (formerly known as "PCMCIA card") and ExpressCard standards. Although the organization's name refers to memory cards, their standards are not limited to memory devices.

"This device can perform faster; This USB Device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Port"

this means that your flash disk is a USB 2.0 version. if you connect to usb 1.1 port which is the built-in port for your laptop. it will prompt you this message. Transfer rate will be slower 12x than usb 2.0

    data transfer rate:

    usb 1.1 = 1.5 MB/s

    usb 2.0 = 60 MB/s

OK to begin your computer doesnt have 2.0 usb, its just windows is telling you about the device attached, I am not sure about upgrading it, but I doubt it is possible. Now from the error you posted, your computer did detect something. Are all the neccesarry drivers installed? If so I would take a look at your bios and set your PCI/Perriphrial to auto, sometimes that will resolve any port assignments which are somewhat commen in laptops, being as they use a hub

IBM Thinkpad A31P sound stopped working. Hdwe device manager shows no Audible Device Available. Troubleshooting indicates current drivers installed and working. Can I assume the audio chip is fried?

Not yet.
Check to see if the Mute has not been selected.
Check the volume level move the slider to a louder level.
Insert a headphone into the headphone socket to see if you can hear a sound.
If all these are done and you still do not hear sounds then you have a problem.
For a fix -
Then I suggest you get an USB audio stick, plug it into an USB port, install the driver and connect speakers to the USB audio stick.

hi

the T42 does not have WiFi, instead it facilitates internet connection via 16 BIT & 32 Bit PCMCIA slot to install a WiFi card , in order to go on the internet.

The ThinkPad uses the following adapters: v 360, 365X, 380, 600: 16-Bit PCMCIA v T20, T22, T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI v T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI Daughter Card v T30: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB) v T4x: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB). 16- and 32-Bit PC Card adapters are configured during ThinkPad initialization. Network Interface Controller data rates are: v For Token Ring: 4/16 MBps v For Ethernet: 10 Mbps...........16 bit PCMCIA 10/100 Mbps.......32 bit CardBus 10/100 Mbps.......MiniPCI and Daughter Card 10/100 Mbps.......T3x and T40 LOB 10/100/1000 Mbps..T42 LOB The MiniPCI Ethernet adapter is accessed behind a removable plate located on the bottom of the ThinkPad directly above the Model/Type S/N sticker. For T20 and T22, the MiniPCI adapter may be an Ethernet/Modem combination card. The Daughter Card (T23) is secured with two screws and is located next to the MiniPCI modem adapter.

Install drivers for ethernet card or buy a usb to ethernet adapter. That will get you on the net so you can install your other drivers via thinkvantage installer. Or you can just cruise the net with the usb to ethernet adapter itself.

How to install hi-speed usb to T21

You don't have the hardware, when you do, xp will install the driver automatically. You can get a PCMCIA card with usb 2.0 and plug it in the slot in the side, around $15 should do it and it is over 20 times faster than 1.1

Machine locks up

install the vendor specifig driver for the PCMCIA. because windows XP sp2 is also able to detect the device and when you push the device online it is detecting and there is some other device which has got same IRQ and that is conflict with this and stop. see any error that is generated in event viwer * run>type "eventvwr" and enter * see the application/system try to detect your error log and see what microsoft says about it. otherwise post the error report Thanks Arun
