Question about Zebra Stripe S600 Thermal Label Printer

Zebra S600 printer continues calibrating

We have a Zebra S600 printer that continues to calibrate even after manual calibration is done. It is my understanding in the manual that after manual calibration is done, it stays on that calibration until prompted with another calibration. Labels are not being changed in the machine to a different size. Unit will usually print about 3 labels and then will lock up the printhead. Then machine will run an auto calibration.
Currently we are using labels without any markings, and the media sensor can't figure out how long the label size is without putting tic marks in between the labels so it has a point of reference.
Any solutions to keep it from calibrating every time you open the printhead?

The media sensor is an LED light. It is not the adjustable sensor. The labels do have a gap in between them, and when I make marks on the perforations, the sensor can detect the length of the labels. What I want is to have the printer not calibrate until I tell it to.

The factory default settings for the S600 is to auto calibrate every time the printhead is closed and every time the power is cycled. If the media sensor is not positioned correctly for the media you are using the label size will not be detected during a calibration. You mentioned the media has no markings, doe sthe media have a space between the labels? If so, the media sensor may not see the gap in the labels adn therefor is not calibrating properly or not calibrating at all. Check the media sensor position. I have found that the media sensor must be at least 1" from the inner wall of the printer so it doesn't see the edge of the backing in oder to read the size of the labels.

The sesnor for the Stripe sreies Zebra are located in the top of the platform of which the labels run under, here is a picture of what I'm talking about:

This tab moves the infrared sensor, the S4M & Z4m have a different type of sensor indicator. These models do have a red light tat indicate the sensor position just as you describe and it does have a lever to move the sensor and it is located under the platform the light is connected to. I can provide a picture of this lever if you wish.

I don't mean to second guess you but, the media sensor in a S600 is infrared and not a red light. Are you sure you don't have a S4M or a Z4M? If you do have a red light as an indicator of the media sensor's position then the lever to adjust the positin i located under the the platformthe light is attached to (usually purple), it slides in and out to adjust the position.

How do i calibrate a S600 printer?

Not sure what you mean by "calibrate". Most printers don't need to be calibrated. Perhaps if you actually describe the problem you're having we could help you fix it.

How do I shut off the auto calibration on start-up? Every morning 1 am wasting 4 labels and ribbon for calibration.

Can only be done by sending a ZPL command. The ZPL manual can be downloaded from the Zebra web site.

Dont want calibrate

Check to make sure that the media sensors are properly aligned. Being out of alignment is most common cause of non-calibration on Zebra's. See here for my tip:

If the media sensor is positioned correctly and the printer is set for an autocalibration on power up and printhead close a manual calibration is not really needed. However, here is the information that is the easiest way to run a manual calibration.

Manual Calibration

With the printer at a ready state, press the MODE button two times or until the CALIBRATE light comes on.

Press the FEED button.

Once this is complete press the MODE button four (4) times to save these settings.

Reg. zebra S600 lable

I had this happen when I changed from one label to a different size label. It needs to be calibrated. There are several types of calibration to do to the S600. Here is the solution that worked for me.
  1. Check the position of the laser Media Sensor (figure 13). It may need to be moved to match the type of label that will be printed.
For CARD labels, the media sensor needs to be set at the edge of the card so it can “see through” the notch that is cut on the edge where the perforation is.

    1. For STICKY labels, it can “see through” the backing which shows between each sticky label, so the Media Sensor could be set anywhere for it to work, but will probably be set towards the middle.
Set to Factory Defaults. This is so that all of the following steps will work. I do not need to change the steps based on the type of mode that printer is set up in because it will erase all that by setting it to the factory default. (See figure 14 for buttons)

    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Hold the FEED and PAUSE buttons down as the printer power is turned on.
    3. Press MODE button four times.
    4. When the defaults are saved to the printer, the CALIBRATE, DARKER, and POSITION lights will all flash.
Test to see if the calibration is set correctly for the label. If not, proceed to the following steps.

  1. Do a Manual Calibration.
Turn off the printer.
    1. Hold the PAUSE, FEED, and CANCEL buttons down as the printer power is turned on, keeping the buttons depressed.
    2. This will run through several labels and do some printing.
    3. Release all three buttons after the CALIBRATION light comes on and then goes back off.
Put the printer into Auto-Calibration Mode.

    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Hold PAUSE, CANCEL, and MODE down as the printer power is turned on.
    3. Release the buttons after printer is powered on.
