Re: Green drooper.

That is a convergence fail. yes you will need to replace the 2 convergence ICs as well as any burnt resistor off the blue vertical convergence yoke. which will be a connector most likely with a blue mark on it. the convergence ICs will located on the right hand side of the chassis screwed into the 2 large heat sinks.

Updated! Convergence Problems & Solutions - With example photos

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit from . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

3 resistors and IC's replaced, still have convergence problem

Well you've done everything pretty well so far. However it sounds like to me you missed one of the resistors necessary to wrap this up. Down by the STK's are three connectors going to each of the yokes, red, green and blue. Locate the one for blue and follow the traces from the connector to the large wattage resistors like the ones you've already changed. One of them affecting blue vertical is probably open. If you have an ohm meter check those resistors after you disconnect the plug going to the yoke. that because those resistors are in parallel with the yoke windings and thus mess with the measurement of the resistors.

Blue looks like it is caved in to the center

Need to replace the convergence amps and test / replace one or more of the 2.2 ohm resistors in the yoke return out in front of the amps.
That unit uses two stk392-110 Sanyo amps, buy originals not the chineese knockoffs. Acme Sales in Florida can sell youthe amps and resistors.
