Question about Panasonic PT-53TW53 53" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

Convergence I also replaced both my IC's and still have no left and right on my blue. I am starting to think maybe the IC's were not the problem, where do I go from here, Everyone mentions resistors, but how do I read them, I am not an electronic kind of guy, but I know enough to replace parts. the blue will move up and down, just not left and right, does this mean something other then the IC/resister repair. I am looking to make this repair myself, so anything more than what I have read on this board, would be helpful

Do I need to know the value of the resistors, or is it, if they are open, they are no good

  • gasman727 Feb 02, 2008

Please forgive my questions if they seem strange at first so I will explain, this is not my TV and I replaced the IC's last weeken, and will hopefully get to his house to check the resistors today.

If I find 1 or more open resistors, how will I know the value of it to replace it. And is this something I can get at Radio Shack.

I thank you ahead of time, you have been very helpful so far

Next to the ICs you will see about 6 or 7 resistors with no color bands usually green in panasonic they all look identical. Check them with a ohms meter to see if any are open. The ICs usually take out one or two of these resistors when they go out.

The resistors will have a rating code on them such as 2.2 1W J which would translate to; 2.2 ohm 1 watt 5% tolerance. Usually panasonics have the 2.2 3.3 or 6.8 ohm but the resistors will be marked. Radio shack may have them. But if not matelectronics.com will and they offer next day air if you call your order in on their toll free number.

Colored lines at top and bottom when tv comes on and seeing double vision in different colors at all times

If your tv is not a DLP the problem is in the convergence, try to adjust it using your original remote control go to the setting menu then to the convergence section. Adjust the red and blue convergence. you should move the red and the blue in up, down and left, right if this color does not move far enough your convergence IC is already defective. Replacing this convergence IC will solve the problem. In locating this convergence IC you should remove the back cover of your unit but be sure to unplug it before doing this. This convergence IC is attached to a large aluminum plate, it is the heat sink, and it has a marking of stk- ### followed by numbers. You can try to pull it out using a soldering iron and soldering pump but be careful you may damage the board and cause much problem to your unit. Or you can contact a technician to do it for you and save you from stress good day and best regards.

Problems after new ic chip install

Did you check for open resistors in the convergence circuits? Often that is what happens when the old ICs wear out it will cause a couple resistors to burn open, and they show no outward sign of being bad. Also double check the IC pins connections for solder bridges thats another common problem, I always use a magnifying glass to double check my solder when ever I do convergence or any IC work where the pins are close. But with the streaks youre describing I would think maybe resistors.

Blue Convergence Problems

You will need to replace the conversion IC that controls the blue STK392-110 or STK392-120 however these are so cheap I recommend replacing both as the red wont last much longer. As they usually wear out around the same time. Heres a link where you can buy the replacement ICs and they include step by step instructions on how to install the new ICs.

Convergence amp ICs need replacing and quite possibly the resisors that power the IC as they usually burn open when the iC goes out. You will need two ICs. Let me know if you need any more info.

Toshiba 65H81 convergence issue

Does the blue and red crosses move at all ... eather vertically or horizontally. if they move at all then it may not be the chips.. could be a resistor. if the crosses dont move then it probally the ic. these chips run about 7 to 45 dollars apeace depending on type. at our shop we charge around 125 to put in.

Right side convergence

A convergence IC has burned out. If I remember correctly, those Pioneer sets have one huge convergence IC, but that IC only has 5 channels in it so they use another smaller dual STK IC and one half of it is used for the 6th channel and the other half is the vertical output. Look on the convergence board, find the blue convergence jack, identify the blue horizontal channel, follow the traces and replace the IC handling the blue horizontal channel.

Has anyone had problems with connecting an 'HDMI to HDMI + SPDIF + RCA L / R Audio Extractor Converter (HDMI input,HDMI+ Audio output)' to a Panasonic PT-53TW53? I have a TiVo Premiere hooked up to my Panasonic PT-53TW53. I use the HDMI out, and RCA R+L outputs on the TiVo, and hook up to the digital in connections on the TV. The conversion of the HDMI out is via an HDMI to DVI cable. This has worked perfectly for years, but recently I wanted to disconnect the TiVo and replace with my Roku or Amazon Fire TV. Both have a single HDMI output. So I purchased an AGPtek HDMI to HDMI + SPDIF + RCA L / R Audio Extractor Converter (HDMI input, HDMI+ Audio output) box, hooking up the HDMI output from the Roku or Fire TV to the input on the extractor/converter, and simply disconnecting the HDMI to DVI and RCA R+L outputs from the TiVo, and plugging them into the outputs on the converter/extractor. The converter/extractor has a 3 position switch: PASS, 2CH audio, or 5.1CH (via and SPDIF or Toslink cable). I have had 2 of these converter/extractors, and with both the Roku and Fire TV I got the same results with both converter/extractors: With the switch on 2CH, which is where I understand I should get HDMI video and 2CH RCA audio, all I get is the RCA audio. No video. If I switch to PASS I get video with no audio. Of course on the 5.1 setting I get nothing, since the TV does not support SPDIF. Yet I see reviews all over Amazon indicating folks are using this converter/extractor for this very purpose, and it is working fine. I can't possibly imagine that it is some sort of incompatibility issue with the TV, since the TiVo has worked (and continues to) fine for years. Any ideas?
