Pink fluid under refrigerator

My refrigerator is not staying cold on the refrigerator side. The freezer side works great. There seems to be a pink, red fluid leaking from under the refrigerator side. Is this related? Thanks for your help. model # 469 5547 We bought it sometime in 1996.

Loklok...no, I don't think so. The only fluid in refrigerators is an oil which is sealed in the cooling system and we know you are cooling. Your fridge may need a full defrost. This occurs because you may have left items uncovered and the moisture condensed in the cooling coils. It could also be the result of improperly sealing doors caused by dirt/ bad gaskets or the like. Best thing to do: shut it off, open the doors and let it defrost fully for a day. Clean the condenser coils under the unit with a long brush. Dry out as best you can and restart. You'll likely be okay. Make sure your freezer side is at about 0-5 above...refrigerator side 35-45. Use a regular thermometer and leave the door closed for at least an hour. (Do these measurements a day after you've restarted.)

Defrost problem folowup

bmurf, This adaptive defrost determined by compressor run time between defrost cycles. It could go up to 96 hours before defrost depending on differnt variables. With the unit running, a good frost on the evaportator and the tstat covered with frost or ice, unplug the refer. Pull the connector off the adaptive defrost board. On the harness, ohm from red to white/black stripe. If your tstat is good, you should read less than one ohm continuity. If it's bad, you probably will read around 240K ohms. This is the resistance of the resistor built into the tstat. On the live checks, plug in the refer. You are going to have 120VAC from Red to white. You also want to see 120V from white to white/black stripe. If you have that, the tstat is closed. If you have less than 120, say 96,100V. on white to red, that means you are dropping power through the 240K resistor built into the tstat. The board senses the tstat is open and no need to defrost. I hope this helps you out cat, thanks for the kind words on your post. Good luck, Catriver

If the coolant from the freezer compartment leaked, will the refrigerator still work (stay cold)? I know the freezer won't work. thanks.

There is only one coolant circuit for a refrigerator. There is a fan that circulates the cold air from the freezer side and pushes it through the refrigerator side and that's how that gets cold. So if all or some of your refrigerent leaked out then the refrigerator will have to be repaired by a qualified technician if you still want to use it.

The refrigerator is not getting or staying cold enough. the freezer seems to working ok

Check the vent at the top of the shared refrigerator wall for cold air from the freezer. If not, then you can either replace the motorized flap inside the vent or prop the flap open with a stick or something. The manual solution won't harm anything. The motorized flap is an over-engineered solution designed to create service calls. :<)

Neither the freezer nor the refrigerator is cooling properly

Check the evaporator coils on the back to see if they are warm. The cooling coils are supposed to be real cold. Sounds to me like you are low on refrigerant, and have a very small leak somewhere. I can't fix that from here, but service tech can find leaks, and recharge, but find cost first as you might just want to buy a new one as the other one is 10 yrs old. Hope this helps you, Rick
