I am having the exact same issue. My computer is about the same age as yours. Eventually my screen does appear but each day it takes longer and longer. If Dell does not sell the part I'm wondering where it can be found? I guess the other choice is taking it to a repair place.

Yes I am having the same problem. If u take a flashlight and put it next to the screen u can see the backlight is out. I took the monitor appart and gave up on replacing the backlight. Looked complicated to me.

Hi I have the same problem with 19 LCD monitors from Dell. This is how to check it. Power on both CPU and monitor. After the monitor goes blank, you check that you can see the image on the screen by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons or any image, there will be a minor problem. Like me, I can see window image using flashlight and check lamps inside. Some of them were broken and it is easily replaced. If you cannot see anything on the screen, there'll be some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or burn spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so.

Going from orange to green is what happens when the signal is getting to the monitor, (after you turn the computer on or wake it from sleep).
LOOK CLOSELY, at the screen, Can you see any image at all? even though it looks black?  Assuming you can, you probably have a BACKLIGHT problem as a number of us are having. This website:
http://www.lcdrepair.us/FAQ.html

has more info on this. They say it is usually the INVERTER board which is the problem which can be replaced. (more rarely the bulb(s) themselves).
BE CAUTIOUS if you should undertake a repair yourself, as there are places on the circuit board that say HIGH VOLTAGE, and reportedly will hold VOLTAGE even after the monitor is off. I believe there are ways of draining this held voltage, but you have to look into that. I took the back off mine and just avoided touching that part, but I haven't replace the board yet.
Reportedly, DELL will not sell any parts to consumers, like the inverter board. But check it out and let me know if I am wrong.
Please post any solutions you should find.

We have around 30 units of DELL Optiplex GX280 having mother board failure. It was more then 3 years old already. Once the turbo fan become noisy then it will gone dead.

May be serious. See if the power light goes amber after power up. I had (have - still siting in my basement) one that did same. Power up, fans sound like 747 taking off. Power light goes and stays amber. This is USUALLY caused by bad capacitors on the mother board. Known GX280 problem going back. If you look on the motherboard, the capacitors should have flat tops and not leaking. If the are rounded or leaking, the MB has probably gone bad.

I obviously can not be 100% sure about this as the unit is not here.

You can google "gx280 solid amber light loud fan" and see the issues. Here is one such link.

More likely to have problem in the inverter circuits, check for short between Emitter and Collector pin of the four transistors as shown in the pictures.

ViewSonic 19" flat screen monitor goes black - intermittently

Hi,
There could be a problem with your display card settings or the display card itself. If you are using Windows operating system, make sure that you have the monitor driver installed for that specific monitor. This is to ensure that Windows only allows settings for which your particular monitor was designed.
Let me know if I can assist you any further regarding this.
Best wishes,

I had the same problem and fixed it with a new backlight inverter board. It was a pretty easy install. The part is available on eBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Inverter-for-Dell-W1700-17-inch-LCD-TV_W0QQitemZ400017456720QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Sound like an electronics failure in the LCD monitor. Since that is a 5 year old 15" LCD it is cheaper to replace it than to repair it. You can take it to a TV repair shop for an estimate if ya want, they'll tell ya the same thing though.

Dell - 17" flat screen

This sounds like the back light is gone on the monitir... to check this look very close at the monitor whet the PC has booted, if you see a VERY dim image on screen then it suggests that the back light is gone.

Many monitors hace a 3 year warranty so I would try a warranty claim before throwing it away

Do you have the same issue when the cable is disconnected from the computer? If so, and the the brightness function doesn't change, then you have an IC Chip failure and the replacement boards are not available to you or me as Dell is Dell and everything from them is proprietary. If you are under warranty pursue that if not, time to replace. Consider this a time, unwanted time, but time to upgrade.

Oh, your right about the sacrificial diode on the power card... you wouldn't see anything.

Hope this fixed ya.

Worldvet

you have snap frame around the screen itself use flat screw driver fine edge, theres about four locations that snap into slots work them away and remove frame, then remove screws on back will seperate ,you will have to remove monitor button panel board to, once inside, four screws around screen itself once in side, this will lead you to power connection inside main screen frame, the board and the connections
