Apparently there were other margins set in higher range.
I started backward and repeated your process and it cleared all 4 set positions.

I didn't give up.......
I've finally cleared the right margin set at 20.
Thanks,

Hremail455, I had the same problem. Press and HOLD Mar Rel and then press and hold the Right (->) button until it gets to the margin setting you want.

Check that there is nothing dropped into the typewriter that may be blocking the carrier try turning the machine off and moving the carrier by hand to the right side,if it moves ok then turn it back on space the place it stops , touch the MR (margin release button) then try spacing further to the right nad reset the right margin.

Use your space bar to move carrier to desired location, hold down Alt key button on bottom left (next to space bar) and press the number 5 numeric key on top row. That should set your right margin.

How do I release the right margin on the typewriter?

Look above the 3 key, you will see M REL that stands for Margin RELease. Move to the margin you want to change and wail holding the ALT key and press 3. Repossition the print head by using the BACKSPACE or SPACE BAR then again hold ALT as you select the new Left Margin or Right Margin (4=L MAR or 5=R MAR)

Right margin will not release Can get to a certain point and it just locks up - Does this have anything to do with the Reloc button which I don't know how to use.

the RELOC button is for when you go back and make a correction, after you make the correction you hit the RELOC button and it will automatically go back to where you left off. if you are typing along and it stops typing and won't go any further, you are at the right margin. if you want to go past this point, you have to hit the MAR REL button. then hit the space bar or keep typing. if you want to move the margin, move the carrier to where you want the margin and hit R MAR, and that will set the margin at that point. works the same way for the left margin.

Setting nargins

The keys used for margin control on the brothers is the ALT key just to the left of the space bar, and the #3,4,& 5 keys.

To move outside the present margin to the left, backspace to the left margin. Press the ALT and '3' keys at the same time to bypass the margin. Back space past the margin to the point where the margin is to be set. At the point you want the new left margin, press the ALT and '4' keys at the same time to set the new left margin.

To move outside the present margin to the right, spacebar over to the right margin. Press the ALT and '3' keys at the same time to bypass the margin. Then spacebar over to the point where the new right margin is to be set. Press the ALT and '5' keys at the same time to set the new right margin.

The basics are that the ALT +3 releases margins, ALT +4 sets the left margin at the point of the carrier, ALT + 5 sets the right margin at the point of the carrier.

Hope this helps.

Right Margin: I need to move the right margin.

Space bar to where the current right margin is. Press "margin release" key once. Space bar to where you want right margin to be. Press "margin right" once. This should work.

Cant find margin release

Generally, the way the margins work is, wherever the printhead is positioned, when you hit the right or left margin set, is where the margin is set. To reset the margin you must move the printhead to where you want the margin set, and hit the appropriate mar. set button. to move the printhead past where the margin is set, you must hit the "mar rel" button, and then backspace or space to where you want he printhead positioned. On machines without a "mar rel" button, you just use the "backspace" or "spacebar" to move past the margin. You can't release the margins permenantly, you can only move them, or move past them using the above mentioned processes.

Margins

Most electronic typewriters work the same way to change margin settings. You use the space bar to move to the desired location then press the right margin key. You should hear a beep. If you need to set it farther to the right of the current position, then use the space bar to move the carrier to the current position, once it stops moving then press margin release then space to the new position then press right margin key.

Unable to set margins

To set the Left margin:

1) Move the carrier ro the place you want to set the left margin by using [SPACE BAR] or [BACKSPACE]. If you need to move outside the current left margin, press [ALT]+[M REL (3)]

2) Press [ALT]+[L MAR(4)]. The left margin is now set.

To set the Right margin:

1) Move the carrier ro the place you want to set the right margin by using [SPACE BAR] or [BACKSPACE]. If you need to move outside the current right margin, press [ALT]+[M REL (3)]

2) Press [ALT]+[R MAR(5)]. The right margin is now set.

That is directly out of the manual. I will upload the manual to FixYa, and you will be able to view it from the ML-500 Typewriter's product page: http://www.fixya.com/support/p131634-brother_ml_500_typewriter

when the typewriter is first switched on the typewriter will automatically set a margin 10 or 12 spaces in,depending on which pitch setting you have. To set a margin say on 20,space-bar in to 20 on the spacing scale and then press Margin Set Key. to set a margin on say, 5 first depress the Margin release key and back-space 5 spaces in and then set then margin as before. Remember that the typewriter will "forget" the settings as soon as it is switched off.
