Nikon F80+MB16 - Problem (?)

By kcw573 - usenet poster

Hi

I'am having a problem with my Nikon F80 and battery holder.

With a fresh charged pack of batteries Ni-MH), I made half a dozen
photos turn off and then I put the camera aside for, let's say, 15
days in its bag.
Nest time I use the camera, after few shots, the battery display shows
half charge (as manual says, almost discharge).
Because I thought the problem is due to the batteries, I bought
another pack but, the same happens.
Now I'am using a pack that had that same indication, directly from the
camera, on a electric motor. The motor is running for more them 24 h
and is still running so, I think, despite the information, the
batteries are with full charge!
Any idea?

Thanks in advance

Regards

Hi

Thanks to Steve and Aidam.

Just one last question: Can I use the same charger with Lithium
batteries I use with Ni-MH?

Thanks in advance

Do NOT recharge lithium batteries!!!!!  Once they are depleted you must
dispose of them, which is another reason I prefer them to alkaline; less
to dispose of! But do NOT try to recharge them.  The drawback to the
lithium AA is the price. And they are pricey. But if they fit your
requirement (as they do mine,) the price is well worth it.
Unfortunately, I can't get them here in Thailand. But I'm having a
couple of dozen sent to me from Japan. That should last me almost a year
of shooting on dry land, for both my F100 and my flashes.

So far, the AA size can't be recharged. But I have a feeling that in the
not so distant future, some company will come out with a type that can
be. Lightweight. More power. Longer lasting. Longer shelf life. Except
for the expense, that would seem to be an ideal battery. Let us pray...

Best battery ever invented (in my opinion, of course!)
Besides the fact that 8 of the AA lithium's weigh less than 4 regular
AA's (making them the perfect travel battery,) they outlast regular
alkaline AA almost 5 to 1 as well. The initial cost is higher, but the
rewards are higher too. I use nothing else these days. They just seem to
last forever. 'Energizer' bunny... watch out!  :o)

Some of the islands that I visit for diving do not have full time
electrical service making rechargables not an option. My underwater
camera setup requires 8 AA's for my twin strobes and two AA's for my
camera. With regular alkaline I can shoot 2 1/2 rolls of film per set of
batteries, so when making two dives a day I have to change 10 batteries
every day. If I'm diving for 10 days, that's 100 batteries I have to
carry with me if I use alkalines. HEAVY!!! When I bring lithium AA's for
the same trip, I only need 20, and they weigh less than 10 alkalines.
Important when you are flying on Island Hopper 9-seater planes that
limit your luggage to 15 kilo per person.

Sounds like a typical problem people run into with NiMH batteries.  They are
great for continual use especially in high drain applications like digicams,
but the shelf life is less than spectacular on a charge.  I usually leave
mine that I use for my digital in the charger until I want to use them.  For
my N80 though, (I also have the MB-16), I invested in a set of Energizer
lithium AA's.  I haven't looked back since.  These have the best shelf life
of any battery out there.  I used one set for an entire two semesters of
being photo editor for a college newspaper with no problem.  They didn't run
out until about a week ago so that's almost a full year of very heavy use.
I highly recommend them and you can pick them up in pretty large numbers on
Ebay for pretty cheap.  Good luck and good shooting.
