Question about Zenith Z50PX2D 50 in. Plasma HDTV

Pop then dark

I was watching tv the other night and heard the pop and then the dreaded black screen. It wasn't bad enough that I almost had a heart attack but to get that gut wrenching feeling that our one year two month old tv was no good. We did not get the extended warranty and hope Zenith won't give us the run around. I wonder why there isn't a major recall on this tv with so many consumers having the same problem. It should be very obvious to Zenith that it is a defect with the manufacturing. It also shouldn't be so difficult to get someone to at least give you a little hope that there is a solution ... (at their expense). I've heard some discouraging stories on this and other sites. What ever happened to the good ol' tvs that would last for several years plus? Ahhhh, technology and disposable electronics.

For now, our tv is sitting in my office like a great big piece of art! Hopefully someone out there can give me some tips on how to approach Zenith tactfully... I don't want to get them pissed off!

Thanks....

Mine went black today, I still have audio. Anyone have a suggestion for a guy off of warranty?? They sell a new one (black instead of silver) for about a grand. I fear the repair is more than that. Write if you have an idea.

Good new for the "Zenith Sucks" problems! (I hope). I contacted Zenith and was given the run (that they would repair the tv and I "would only have to pay labor" - ha! When he was through giving me the run around I informed him that this same problem has happened to several consumers. He quickly told me he "would have to talk with his supervisor" and I was put on hold (of course for several minutes). When the rep returned to my call he quickly changed his tune. He told me to fax to Zenith a copy of my receipt (of which I had none) - I guess it is lost in the "black hole" of my office. Anyway, I contacted Circuit City and they printed a receipt of the sale and I sent that to Zenith along with the serial number, etc.. The Zenith rep gave me a case number for follow up and that should be on the fax as well. I am now awaiting a response. He did say they would repair the tv free of charge. Get the rep's name (it probably doesn't matter but do it anyway) If this does not take care of the problem, I will go on to the next step. The only thing you can do is to be very persistent and don't let Zenith tell you that you will have to pay for the labor ... tell them what I told them and they will change their tune. They know the problems we are having and are just trying to put us off... do they think we are complete fools? When it comes to taking money out of my pocket, I will get fighting mad....For those of you who don't have your service manual, call 1-877-993-6484 and you can have the pleasure of talking with one of Zenith's service reps. Do not take no for an answer --- do not let him tell you that you will have to pay labor to have your tv repaired. Good luck. We'll see if my response is exactly what I want - to have my tv up and running as soon as possible. Hope this helps - we should not have to go through this - shame on Zenith!

You go Dawgboy! I faxed my info to Zenith a couple of days ago. Giving them time to process it, etc.. All-in-all it was pretty smooth. The rep was nice but obviously trying to pull one over on me... I did let him know (nicely but firm) that this was a persistent problem. As I offered in my solution email, just be persistent. It's too bad that we even have to go through this... now, I am looking forward to getting my tv fixed and hopefully I won't have the "pop" experience again. If so, I'll move on to the next step.

Lost mine yesterday. This is not the first time. The first time it was covered. This time I am sure it will not. The TV is only three years old and my family is ready to go back in time and have to watch the 20 year old 19 inch signature tv that is in our basement and is still working. My gut could not handle paying big money for another expensive tv.

My Z50PX2D was just over 2 years old and well out of warranty when the “Pop/Blank Screen” problem struck. However, LG took great care for the situation.
I civilly called LG's customer service (very nice people… all of them). LG’s CS phone number is (877) 543-8325. After a few short phone calls (less than 5 minutes each) over 4 day period, they extended my warranty and it is currently being serviced ($0 out of my pocket).
Here are some tips on the working with LG on the “Pop” issue (this should reduce the number of phone calls needed):
- RULE #1… Be respectful to all of them, everyone I spoke to were extremely nice.
- Have the model number, serial number, date of purchase and original receipt (they will require it faxed) on hand.
- Call LG Customer Service (877) 543-8325
- They will ask how they can help: Tell them what happened to your TV and you want to see if they can extend your TV’s warranty for the “pop” problem.
- They will setup a case:
o Will ask for your information (name, address, phone, model, serial number, date of purchase)
o Will ask what the problem was (IE: watching TV, there was a loud pop from the TV and the screen went out). No need elaborate too much, they know this problem exists.
o Will ask for you to fax the receipt to their fax number (they will provide)
§ Note the case number, your name and phone number on the receipt before faxing.
- Before hanging up, ask them for the case number. This will make it easier for everyone when you call back.
- Give them about 24 hours before calling to verify they received the fax.
o If they have received the fax and applied the notes to the case, they should be able to let you know if they will extend the warranty on that call.
o If the fax was received but not yet added to the ‘Case’, give them one more day.
Hopefully you will have success in having your warranty extended.

We just gave up on Zenith and wil NEVER buy anything from them or LG EVER AGAIN. I wish Zenith would just offer to pick it up and throw it away for me......I do not know what to do with it now.

We ended up buying a Panasonic 50" Plasma to replace it. Fry's sells for $1,399.00....So far so good.

Thanks Dawgboy...I will give it another try.

I did call LG Wednesday night and all they could offer was parts and I would have to pay the labor, which is what I did the 2nd time the set "popped", that time it was $200 in labor and I had to bring the set to the repair shop myself or pay another $125 for them to pick it up...

This is the 3rd time it has "popped"...I wish Zenith own up to there defective product.

I am glad it worked out for you, Dawgboy...wish me the same luck!

I heard a pop and screen wet black. red lamp

Lamp inside TV is broken and requires replacement. Pop sound was its breaking sound.
Lamp replacement procedure is written in user manual, pretty easy.
Please buy Sony original lamp for TV safety and avoid aftermarket/ cheap lamp.
Let me know if you need to download user manual copy.
Thanks.

No picture black bars heard a pop and burst on screen

Most likely a capacitor burst damanging the screen. I reccomend leaving it off in order to prevent further damage. If its still under warranty contact samsung asap. ( http://www.samsung.com/us/info/contactus.html# )
If its no longer under warranty take a look in your local yellow pages for local electronics repair shops and they might be able to figure out how bad it is. But mostly likely a capacitor burst damaging the screen,  so its going to be a costly repair if its not covered by warranty. And if thats the case I would suggest just buying a new tv vs the cost of repair. Hopefully its still under warranty though.

Dark band at top of screen...now whole screen

Pop sound is probably the Lamp or maybe the color wheel. When you unplug and try it on do you hear a whirling or winning sound ? Is it followed by a slight ticking sound ? If you get the whirling and a ticking sound it's probably a bad lamp. If you don't hear the whirling sound you may have a bad color wheel. The parts are both made of glass. The pop you heard was one of them breaking. If you can't tell, order a lamp you will need to change it eventually anyway.
