This is usually caused by a motor that has gone bad. The hum is caused because the motor windings have gone bad inside the motor and its cheaper to buy a new motor and install it yourself if your capable. Its pretty straight forward once you see it. Be sure to disconnect any power supply before working with electrical. You will need the model number and sometimes serial or date of mfg. Sears and other dealers are good about finding your part. Be warned, the cost of a new dryer might not be far off from the price of a new motor. Hope this helps.

How to get to dryer drum. GE mod#dbvh520ej2ww

Hello there and welcome to fixya
The most common problem with these are the motor or the motor bearings or rollers
and next is clothes getting caught between the drumb and the shell of the unit
Here is some troubleshooting help for you listed below
Motor If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor: Remove the belt. Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing. Manually rotate the shaft of the motor. If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor. If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again. If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor

I have a GE Profile Prodigy eletric dryer that wont start. When I turn the switch it hums and stops when I let go of the switch, but won't start. Is that a switch problem or motor? How do I tell?

Hello,

That sounds like to me the drum belt is broken..GE dryer use a belt switch that if the belt is broke will perform exactly as you describe ..as long as holding the start switch the motor will run and as soon as you release the start switch the motor will stop.

To check for a broken belt remove the top by removing the 2 phillips headed screws inside of the door at the top of it and pull off the top to see if the belt is in place and attached to the drum..if no belt seen when top off its broken and laying down in the base frame

My dryer wont start. When i turn the button to start it, it hums but wont run.

something is jamming the drum of the dryer from turning... remove the casing and take a closer look. There may also have been something recently dried which may have come out and jammed the dryer drum. Try hand turning the dryer drum to see... it should freely revolve at least a little bit
Good luck with it

GE dryer model DDE8200GALAD was working fine. After removing a load and trying to dry another, after inserting the load and shutting the door when you turn the timer to start it before pushing the start...

If you hear the motor humming and not starting at all it most likely has a severe friction problem with the drum or motor. It could possibly have some type of garment jamming the blower wheel preventing the motor from starting too.

Open the dryer door and manually rotate the dryer drum counter clockwise (CCW). It should take very little effort to rotate the drum. If it's hard to rotate that could explain why the motor hums instead of starting up. If it turns freely, shut the door and see if will start. If it still hums and not start it may have bad motor or a low voltage supply to the motor.

Dryer just sits and hums

if you push the start and it just humms it is a bad dryer motor to weak to kick on,to confirm this have sombody hold the dryer door button in and turn the drum when you push the start button,if it jump starts you know it's a bad motor-mike

DRYER PROBLEM

If the drum isn't jammed, you have probably lost a belt.

Remove the rear panel of the machine and look for tattered remnants of a black belt.

GE Dryer DWSR473GV0WW periodically just hums when turning on switch

if it hums when you start it means switch is ok. problem may be the motor capacitor. to check, take off the top and give the drum a push in the normal direction of rotation. if it goes then motor capacitor is faulty - cheap part
