I can't find the right (DVD+R) to record with my unit. I use to use a TDK DVD+R brand but it nolonger works. My unit will not format, the recordable disck that I use. I have bought almost every brand of recordable DVD+R Disc. The brand I use to use was the TDK DVD+R 4.7 Single Side (RW), but that same brand is nolonger.
The disks required by the go-video are the dvd+r only..the brand shouldn't make any difference.
I would stay away from the 'cheapies',but you dont need expensive disks.
if you get an error when you start 'rec' ,the message displays why.
check your settings, and be sure the record timer is off.
if you have multiple segments recorded, and you record until the disk is full,
it may not finalize because there is not enough room on the disk for the menu structure.
the disk will only play in this machine. if it simply wont record, you might try a lens cleaning disk.
or you have a failure in the write laser.

I've occasionally found that some brand new DVD-Rs are rejected by Pana recorders, and have put this down to manufacturing faults on the discs. It's usually not worth taking them back when one disc of a pack of 100 is faulty.
All I can recommend is that you use a renowned brand, such as TDK, Maxell, etc to reduce fail rates.
Any brand name DVD disc like TDK,Memorex or RCA extra..as long it is 8X or 16X DVD+R format for one time recording only.Or DVD+RW u will able to Re record over the old data's was in the DVD disc earlier only.
This model (PY90DG) DVD recorder supports the following disc recording formats: DVD+RW/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD-R for everyday video. These should record fine. The RW discs are for repeated recording/erasure while the R discs are once-only recording types - the R discs must be finalised in this deck to make them playable on other DVD players. DVD-RAM discs are NOT supported by this unit. This recorder will play MP3 files on a CD-R or CD-RW (not DVD-ROM) just fine as well, but will not record them.
Best discs to buy for this type of recorder are DVD-R (recommended brand - Verbatim or TDK if you can get them, but not Memorex). These are OK.
Below is a list of discs that should or should not be used with the DVD recorders.
4x can be used
8x will result in a disc error.
2x can be used
4x will result in a disc error.
The following discs have been tested and are proven to be compatible with our DVD recorders.
IMATION DVD-R 2.0
TDK DVD-RW 2X
TDK DVD-R 2X
The following are brands of discs we DO NOT recommend:
TDK DVD-RW 4x
TDK DVD-R 4x
Please be aware that a free software upgrade is now available to customers. This upgrade will enable your unit to recognize the (DVD-R 8x) discs. To obtain a copy, please call 1-800-242-7158. Customer service by phone is available 7 days a week 6:00am to 9:00pm pacific time.
In order to receive the upgrade we need to know what firmware version your unit requires. First you need to access the DVD recorders service mode. Turn on the DVD Recorder and the Television, make sure the unit is on the DVD side. You may access the service mode by pressing the CMSKIP button on the remote control. Once you press CMSKIP you must press the numbers 1,2,3. You must do this quickly so it may take a couple tries. The model name will appear on the screen followed by Firmware Version. I need to know the serial number next to FE: Press the RETURN button to exit screen.

Go to Office Depot buy TDK brand 16x DVD's thay are the only one's other than the Sony 8x that my machine can use. the Sony 8x which are getting harder and harder to find work great. Just go to O/D and buy a small pack of 25 or 50 of the TDK -R 16x DVD's and test them on your machine.
Sorry to hear about your problem. I do own this model too. I have not gotten the update myself. I just started using the dvd recorder.I bought a pack of dvds (Ativa) and now I need to return them, they are not supported by this dvd player. I called the 800 number and they told me some of the dvd brands it supports: JVC, TDK, Memorex, Maxell and Sony. I know Sony works, because I used them before. I also read "Vibratim" brand from Sam's Club works.
