Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

Mybook hard disk size question

Hello!
My fiancee purchased a My Book. He is worried cause it's supposed to be a 500 GB, but it is reporting 698 GB. I'm wondering if perhaps he purchased a bigger mybook than he thought.

Here are his model number and serial number off the bottom:

mdl: WD7500C037

S/N: WCAPT0258000

Is it a larger mybook than what he thinks, or is there an actual issue with the size it is reporting?

Thanks,
Lynda

Hey Lynda,
Based on the model number it is a 750gb version. The model number indicates WD for Western Digital and the 7500 for 750gb. So it is not a 500gb as it would rather state WD5000. Hope this helps.

Take Care

How do i use SATA to recover my data from my WD 500 gb mybook? you see my power source is working at all.

You dismantle the case and extract the hard disk. Then you take that disk and you put it in a desktop pc (you will need a SATA dat cable, a SATA power cable and 4 small screws tu secure the disk inside. Once it's installed just start the pc and open My Computer - the disk will be there, copy from it whatever you want.

WD Mybook 500 GB does seem to spin, computer can't recognize it. Is it junk now?

The hard disk is not reading. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:

HOW TO CHANGE 320GB SATA HDD TO 500GB SATA

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.

Cant download large files to my book

The controller board in Mybook might not support files over 4 gb. Check with the manufacturer if there are any new drivers for you product to solve your dilema. You could also just buy a cheap external case for the drive in the mybook and swap it out. None of the new cases have these limitations and you can get them online for less than 20 bucks. I like MAD Dog cases myself. I hope this helps you.
