Thanks for the suggestion. It did not work so well for me though. But fortunately I fixed my camera with a different trick.

I turned the camera on, it said "Turn the power off and on again". Now with the camera still on, I opened the battery cover, the camera got switched off automatically. Now I closed the battery cover and turned the camera on using the regular power on button. Bingo, my camera was back to normal operation.

I have a cybershot DSC W55. When the power button is switched on the lens extends and the "access" message shown on screen. Also amber light is flashing above screen. After a few seconds I get a message to power on and off again. I\'ve tried switching on and off a few times, removing battery pack and memory card, but nothing seems to be solving the problem.

Lens won't come out

Replace with new batteries. If that doesnt solve the problem then it may be time for new camera. Cheaper to replace than try to fix.

Turn the power on and off again

I fixed this issue with my Sony Cybershot by gently (carefully) hitting the camera 3 times against a carpeted bench with the lens retracted and the camera turned off. It seems the lens gears were stuck. Now the camera works fine again.

Sony DSC-N1

I had the exact same problem, from reading various different articles it sounded like the problem was lens guide pins being out of position. When the lens was extended when tuned on, I held it open and twisted slightly, a slight click was heard (the pins relocating I think) and the camera returned to normal. I hope this helps.
