Question about Panasonic DMR-ES40VS DVD Recorder/VCR

Open Question

Problem recognising dvd ram disk, can't record or play back

The Panasonic DMR-ES40V does not recognize the DVD RAM disk. IT indicated that it is an incompatible disk. I also purchaced new DVD RAM DISK and got same error message. It will not record, playback or let me use any function when the DVD RAM is is inserted. It will however, record, playback when using a DVD-R disk, but in order to record the next program, the Panasonic DMR-ES40V needs to be unplugged and reset for each additional program. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. At times it will indicate on display that it is recording, yet nothing is recorded on the disk. Very frustrating!
I only want to be able to use my DVD-RAM DISK, but again its says the DVD RAM disk is an incompatible disk although the DVD RAM was included when DMR-ES40V was purchased as new. Please Help!

My DVD player/recorder only works sporadically. When I insert a new disk I can check the navigator to make sure it is working. After recording a live program or dubbing from VHS, it tells me that it cannot read the disk that was just recorded on this same machine. I have done all of the troubleshooting that I know how to do. This is getting really frustrating. Darleen

My DMR-ES40V will not read DVD-RAM discs, simply saying that the disc cannot be read and saying to "check disc." It also freezes when trying to record to DVD +R discs.

I have a large library of DVD-RAM disks that I have recorded with this player and now none of them will playback. It records and plays regular DVD's just fine. I have tried the channel up and down reset and unplugged it for a day and still have and Err message when inserting the RAM disks, is there something else I should be trying?

SOURCE: Since it went into "disk recovery mode" it now will not play dvds

Got the same problem. Happened 2 months after guarantee expired. **** machine. The only good thing is the harddrive and that is made by HITACHI not Panasonic! I go Sony next time. Panasonic quoted £200 plus to fix the problem. I only paid £220 when I bought it new.

Panasonic ES40v - Can't play DVD's - Incorrect region

I had the same trouble, also wouldn't play back discs that I recorded using it. The commonly listed reset of channel up and down at the same time was not meant for this model.
Below is the official solution that was sent to me by panasonic.
After using this method to reset my player it worked great. it was just like taking it out of the box for the first time.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your inquiry, reguarding model DMR-ES40V.

Try this reset to fix the issue.

1. Unit power must be on.

2. Press [STOP] & [VHS > DVD] ON THE UNIT for over 5 seconds.

Thank you for contacting Panasonic.

Thank You,

We need to narrow down where the problem lies. Even without finalizing the disc, you should be able to play back the recording. Can you do this? If you can play back the recording, the problem exists in the finalization stage and we'll need to concentrate there. Please update this and we'll proceed to the next step.

Thanks,

Dvd recorder

Hi Nickstart, start checking if the problem is related with the kind of Disk and test on different brands, disk types.
Even if a recorder is supposed to work fine on both +R, -R etc. , often you find out, that due to error correction methor, a device worksd well on one or the other type.

Your DVD supports the following DVDs -R, -RW, -RAM, all -R disks are supported both on 3'' and 5''.
On +R it just writes regular DVD +R, DVD +RW and mini DVD +R are not listed in DVD specs, therefore are not supported on writing.
When your unit records DVD +R it changes the format to DVD-V, The usint does not support DVD+RV.

I assume it works better with -R

I often get troubles with many DVD low price brands, try testing some good ones like Verbatim, TDK, Sony , Philips etc.

See also the manual here, at page 6 and 7 it also says: "Play may be impossible on some DVD-RW (DVD Video Recording format), +RW, CD-R or CD-RW discs due to the condition of the
recording."

Hope this had been helpful, test both a good brand DVD-R and a Good brand DVD+R.
If it still has problems when finalizing the CD, then it can be the usual lens problem, Or the DVD you are writing is too big in size and your player has problem on the final phase of DVD writing. If Data nearly takes all the 4.7 Gb allowed, there won't be enough space to finalize the DVD.
