Question about Sony SLV-998HF VHS VCR

1 Answer

Intermittent tuner operation

My Sony SLV-998HF has intermittent tuner operation that started happening out of nowhere. Sometimes the tuner works for a little while, then I start getting scratchy video and audio here and there, then goes out completely (blank screen). Stereo and SAP indicators will go out at same time as if signal feed was lost when in fact it has not been. Bad solder joint somewhere in or around tuner is the strong idea I'm getting, would just like more input from someone. I've heard bad solder joints are common with Sony. I've owned unit since new (1998).

VHS Stuck; Cover is off; nothing moves...wheels,

Unplug the unit, then plug it back in WHILE holding down the EJECT button ... The tape should come out unless there is a belt broken, missing, or loose.

I have used old, inoperable VCR's for tuners only as well. What happens if you leave the tape in all the time? Does the tuner work like that?

Sony KV-27S10 has intermittent tuner issues. moving the cable connection on the back of the set sometimes clears the picture.

This was a common problem with the Tuners of these models. The replacing of the Tuner should fix the Problem. You may be able to order it from Sony.
Here is their Customer Service Number.
I hope this helps,

Sony SLV-640HF Problem

I would be inclined to say that there are only two likely problems that you may be encountering. Either you are getting a bad signal feed, or the connectors on the cable are getting old and need replaced. The connection to the cable can break down over time, especially if they have been connected and reconnected several times. I cannot rule out problems caused by the transition to DTV, but that doesnt seem likely if there are only a few channels affected. As far as "selective failure" of the VCR's built-in tuner, I would say that that is also a very unlikely source for the problem If the tuning components inside the tuner had gone out, I would expect to see a problem on all channels watched through the system. If you are having this problem on all channels of the sony, then the tuner could surely be the problem, but if you haven't used it much that would indicate a problem at manufacturing, however since at least one of the machines is working fine on some channels and not on all of them, I would suspect the connections or the signal from your cable company. Contact them first ands see if they are having signal issues, if not try replacing your connectors.
