Slapping the unit causing the missing sound to come back tells me that there is something loose in the receiver. This could be a bad solder joint or dirty switch contact. Vibrations, such as sound, could be jarring the bad connection and causing the sound to cut out when it was just working a few seconds before. I don't believe you have a bad part in the receiver. When a solid state device fails, its gone for good. Again, it soulds like a bad connection. Finding a bad solder joint can sometimes be difficult. What you need to do is take the cover off so you can see the bottom of the PC board and using a good light source and magnifying glass, look for the bad connection. You can try running the receiver with the cover off and using a plastic pen, try pushing down on the PC board and see if you can make the sound cut out. You may be able to isolate the area by where you push on the board. Look for loose wires too. While you have the receiver open, buy some electrical contact cleaner in a spray. Radio Shack used to sell this as TV Tuner cleaner. I don't think they carry it anymore though. Spray the switches and rotate them back and forth several times. See if this resolves the problem. If you do find a bad solder joint, all you have to do is resolder it with some new solder. Make sure you do this with the power OFF. You're not looking at a big bill here. It's an easy fix once you find it.

Good Luck.

Sony STR-DG710 center speaker makes no sound. Connections are good.

Sometimes these units have the ability to switch the speaker off and on. Look up the speaker settings in the manual.
As each channel in the unit will be separately driven the power amp for the center channel could have failed, but I think it's unlikely unless you have had problems with the sound on it before, or connected it wrongly causing a fault.

Why do I often get 'no signal' message on various channels in Samsung DV3 TV?

If the reception is intermittant, check all the external signal input connections; for firmness.

Preamp intermittent channel

Getting the connections right is a problem. One thing I find helps is the THX DVD discs that certain movies have on them. They have a sound set up to get it right. It makes a tone for each channel so you can hear which channel is working. It should help you set up the system right and determine if any channel has a fault on it.

Sound center

Replace center channel speaker with known good one. If no longer scratchy then the voice coil of removed unit is rubbing against the magnet pole and the speaker needs to be replaced. If the replacement speaker also sounds bad, then the amp for the center channel needs repair.

I have a Sony STR-K502P home receiver. While watching a program the other day the center channel stopped working. Prior to that I had recently noticed a clicking noise like a relay switching off and...

It wouldn't be your output transistors. If they go bad they blow the fuse. Sounds like a speaker relay problem. Have you checked the solder connections on the relays? They sometimes break down. If that doesn't help, I would replace the relay. Center channel goes through RY501. Sony p/n: 1-755-170-11.

On any channel I've begun to get a intermittant

If this has a digital effects processor read on.., I had a SIMILAR problem on a Behringer GX110.

The electrolytic filter cap for the 5 volts of the DSP effects had gone bad. The 5 volts was dipping when the DSP reset and it would repeatedly reset causing a clicking at about once a second. 50 cent part fixed it. The part is a little undersized electrically so is more prone to failure in the unit I have.

That particular one had the DSP as a seperate board with its own 5 volt supply from the main transformer.

Center channel drops once unit warms up

You don't have an external amlifuer, do you? You could hook the pre-amp out for the center channel to an external amp and connect the speaker to the amp. That way you could determine if it is the center channel output or the internal amp. Either way you probably need to get it serviced.

Channel cut out

Stereo Tech: Sounds like you definitly have a broken solder connection on the main PC board. A bad solder connection is tricky to find somtimes if one is not familiar with exactly what it looks like (kinda like mt st helens with a ring around the top) if you attempt this yourself DO NOT MAKE A SOLDER BRIDGE you will open pandoras box. Good luck
