Question about Pioneer DVR-640H DVD Recorder/HDD Recorder

Tuner doean't appear to be using 525 NTSB setting for auto channel tuning

Got unit for x-mas. Still doesn't work right. This is a mutli region unit but seems not to have any NTSC-M. Have system set to 525 but seems to tune and set channels using 625 with its "auto scan" feature. "Auto Tune" results is horibly fuzzy presets. Then going to to manual tune feature results in availability of manual tune "windows" where you can change the channel system, but only offeres UK&IE, Fra, Western Europe, and Eastern Europe which are 625 areas. All channels tuned are still very fuzzy even after adjustment of AFT. No sound is present and Sound System selection availability in the same manual tune area is I, L, B/G, D/K which are 625 ITC broadcast codes. Listing of tuned channels preview shows nothing but I and B/G. The AV2/L1 input is set to NTSC as well as L2 and L3. No matter what I do, it seems like this thing is trying to use 625 tuning. Unit plays DVDs fine. Unit is DVR-550H but this format only lists similar 640H. I am pretty A/V savy, have reviewed the operators manual indepth but making little progress. I can see why people go Tivo. Help!

It certainly looks like it should work according to the manuals. There are firmware updates available for this unit. Or you may have to take the unit to a pioneer agent to have it sorted.

The tuner may be faulty also. The agents would be able to check this for you. You could try to get to the source direct

To check and install a new firmware just follow the six easy steps below:

    1. Check the current Firmware Version:

    • Switch on your DVD Recorder
    • Select "Home Menu"
    • Select "Initial Settings"
    • Select "Audio Out"
    • Select "Dolby Digital Out"
    • Select "Dolby Digital" and push the "9" button on the remote

    • Remember, you'll only need to update your DVD Recorder if the FW version is lower than the version mentioned in the download table.
    • To return the DVR to its normal operating state, press the Home Menu button on the remote control.

    2. Download the Update:

    • Click on the filename in the above download table to start your download

    • If your browser does not automatically start the download process, be sure that your browser or security software is set to allow downloading of files from this web site.
    • You can also right-click the button and select "Save Target As" to start the download process.

    3. Check the Firmware File

    • Check the file size (see table) of the downloaded firmware file xxyyzz.zip by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. (Download again if the file size is incorrect.)

    4. Decompress the file
Once you have downloaded the file to your computer, locate the file on your hard disk drive and double click the file to decompress it. (If you do not have a decompression utility installed on your computer, you can easily download one for free.)
    5. Create the Update Disc

    • It is important to use a good quality branded blank CD-R disc or completely erased CD-RW disc.
    • Create the update disc by burning the file to a CD-R or CD-RW disc.
    • Burn the decompressed file to the disc using disc-at-once mode (2x Speed) and ISO 9660 CD-ROM file system format. (The player will not recognize the update disc and the update cannot be performed if the file is not burned correctly to the disc.)
    • Make sure that the disc session is closed / the disc is finalised.

    6. Update your device

    • Update the firmware using the CD-R or CD-RW disc containing the firmware file.
    • Perform the update following the procedure given in the PDF DVD Recorder Update instructions.
    • Note: Do not turn off or disconnect power, or remove a disc while the update is in progress

AUTO TUNING WONT RUN

Check and replace its main system control memory IC. If this IC is faulty, auto tuning will not work, or, the TV will store any received channels. If the TV do not tune into channels too, the AGC voltage to its tuner, and tuner itself should be checked.

Cant tune in any channels

Look to see if set functions via rear audio/video inputs--if no channels either not hooked up right, no signal, or a bad tuner.

Using rear inputs will bypass the tuner in the set.

Before tuning the set to auto tune mode, make sure the antenna or cable, whatever may, connected to its appropriate sockets at the back of the set firmly. To make it autotune:

As new services are broadcast, it will be necessary to

re-tune the television in order to view them.

Auto Tuning will completely re-tune the television

and can be used to update the channel list. It is

recommended that Auto Tuning is run periodically to
ensure that all new services are added. All current

Up or Down buttons. Press OK and Setup menu
will be displayed.

[2] Select the Installation from the Setup menu

by using Up or Down buttons. Press OK and
Installation menu will be displayed.

]3] Select Automatic Channel Scan from the Installation

menu by using Up or Down buttons and press OK.

A screen will appear warning that previous digital

programmes and settings will be deleted. Select Yes
and press OK to continue with the Auto tuning.

The television will start to search for all available

stations. You must allow the television to complete

the search. When the search is complete the Auto

tuning screen will display the total number of
services found.

* After search is completed for digital channels, a

message asking whether to search for analogue
channels appears on the screen

** Press the OK button to search for analogue

channels. The following menu appears on the screen

VCR tuner cannot tune in my cable channels

It is working as designed. The purpose of your cable box is to take in a wire containing all of the possible channels you might watch, and then extract *one* channel, and force it to appear as channel 3. If you connect the cable directly to the VCR, then the VCR's "tuner" (ie, channel selector) has an opportunity to extract any channel it wants. But... as you point out, your VCR won't be able to "see" any of the digital channels. So... if your goal is to be able to watch any of the digital channels, the signal must pass through your cable box, which will put the selected channel on channel 3. There is no value in going from the VCR to the cable box, since the VCR's tuner will have already filtered out all but one channel. It would be helpful to make a list of what your useage goals really are, since there are so many different ways to hook these things up. Are you interested in: - watching digital channels? - recording digital channels? - watching one channel while recording another? - using higher quality video signals (composite, s-video, component, etc) rather than RF (ie, channel 3) And so on. Keep in mind that you have *three* tuners: Your cable box, your VCR, and your TV. It sounds like only your cable box can tune in the digital channels. If your cable box puts out any non-RF signal, then the best choice would be to go: Coaxial Wire -> Cable Box -> Video Connection -> VCR -> Video Connection -> TV, with the VCR and the TV both set to "video". Then you would only use the cable box as a tuner, the VCR would only see the tuned channel (via video in), and the TV would see the same channel (or whatever tape you are playing) on its video input.
