I would strongly suggest that you have a tech install the light engine. The tech that installed ours literally had to take the set apart. He did a terrific job and our TV is almost 4 years old and looks brand new. You need to call Hitachi customer relations department at 800-654-7013 and tell them the problem you're having. They will initially act like they've never heard of this problem but will give you the names of some certified dealers in your area. Once a tech comes out and confirms that it's a defective light engine, call Hitachi back at the 800 number I listed and they will call the dealer to confirm this. Once it's been confirmed, Hitachi will send a brand new light engine to the dealer and the tech wil come out and install. The part cost around $1500 but Hitahci is replacing this for free.

If you're not still under warranty, you will have to pay for the install. Our install was $400 but others on this blog have paid as low as $200. If you're still under warranty, Hitachi will cover the part and the install. Good luck:)

This is not something you want to try yourself. You have to remove the top of the television to accomplish that change. It is something you would defintley want to pay a tech to do.

My picture is all yellow??

In most cases a "yellow" picture on a TV means the lack of blue. If this is the case and you have a 50V500 your light engine is most likely at fault and would require the skills of a technician to replace it.

There is a red spot and distortion in the middle of the screen. I changed the lamp but it did not help (hitachi 50v500) LCD rear projection TV

I do not have good news for you---this model is prone to the optical light engine going bad---usually a red oval area in the middle of the screen----I have also read that there are now several class action lawsuits related to this problem in this set. You can Google the model number and you will set what I am talking about.

I have replaced several light engines(called an optical engine) in this model--both the 50V500 and the 60V500 have this problem.

The last time I checked the optical engine wholesaled for about 600 dollars and is major labor to replace--I had someone else here ask me about this set---He was in Canada and the first time he called Hitachi he was told they were not aware of any problem--after posting here with me he called them back and someone admitted they knew about this but had been told not to say anything or admit any problem---thousands of these sets all have the same problem.

Clearly the set is not worth a 600 dollar part plus labor---considering the cost of new sets, but the only other option you have is to try to connect with one of the several class action lawsuits---I found them by typing the model number and lawsuit after it on Google.

I know I am not giving you good news but I know this set.

If this information has been helpful for you, please take a minute to give me a vote here--I do this here for free.

Blue blob on screen of 50V500 tv

it's not the lamp (obviously, as you found out). the light filter on the blue lcd has a burn mark on it and needs replacing. many companies don't sell parts for the optical engine (where the filter is), so you may have to purchase the whole engine, which tends to be pricey.

If you have the "red" blob in the center of the screen or you have "blue" blobs that show up in random areas of the picture then the only repair is to have a technician replace the optical light engine.

You may want to find a service shop willing to troubleshoot the power supply vs replacing a $300+ part. Labor will still be a few hundred but parts would be minimal.

For $350.00!!!!

Absolutely!!!

Just do not expect it to be a great picture for long but, you never know you may have a rare good one. For that price I would put it
in the garage and have something special to watch the games on. Even if it goes bad the lamp is almost worth that in some circles.

Hitachi 50v500 blueing problem

I am not expert but before you go to a lot of trouble, read all of the post on the infamous "red cloud", "red blob" and "blue streaking". In evey case, it appeared that the light engine was the problem. We just had our light engine replaced and the TV looks perfect. We dealt only with Hitachis Customer Relations Department 800-654-7013. You will have to have a certified tech come out and diagnos the problem. Hitachi will then call and verify, with the dealer, that the problem is a defective light engine and will send out a brand new one.

We were told the part cost around $1500 (Hitachi covers that) however, they will ask you to pay for the install. Our install cost $400. Worth is to us as we paid $3600 for this set 3+ years ago and we have loved this TV. When you first call Hitchi, they will act like they've never heard of this problem but they will give you names of certified techs in your area. Once the tech confirms that it's the light engine, Hitachi will own up to the problem and send out the part.

You really should only deal with Customer Relations ( I listed their 800 number above as you will be chasing your tail so to speak with their regular customer service department. Good Luck!

Hitachi 50V500 TV: has a red line that outlines faces or text

It's a light engine defective part. Hitachi knows about it and if you call their customer relations department, they will refer you to a dealer in your area to come and diagnos the problem. Once Hitachi can verify that's the problem, they will ship the part to the dealer. We had our part in 2 days and had it installed today. No more problems. TV looks brand new. We had to pay the installation of $400 but the part runs around $1500 and Hitachi covered it. We felt like $400 was worth the $3600 we bad 3+ year ago when we bought it. The color will only get worse if the light engine is not replaced. Good Luck! It was an easy fix!

You have a bad light engine. This is a common problem with that model. Go to www.hitachiserviceusa.com.

There is a service bulletin for this problem - you need to reintialize the memory settings in the service menu - I have a pdf file showing how to do this.
