File Encryption problem

Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I have recently completed some work on a Word document and attempted to open it at my place of work. Unfortunately, whenever I try to do this anywhere other than on my computer, it asks for file encryption passwords. This is fine, as I know them. However, it always says 'in use by a another program' - when Word isn't even open on the computer! How is this possible? What do I do?

Thank you so much

Re: File Encryption problem

Microsoft Word document protection has some features that will cause a document to be opened Read Only by anyone except one specific user, so if you have that turned on... it could cause your problem.

So on your home machine, go to Tools->Protect Document... and disable any document protection you have enabled there, then try and bring your document to work and opening it. If you need your document protected, try to see if you can make the protection password-driven only, and not have any user-driven protection.

Pdf files garbled

The PDF, or portable document format, file bridges the gaps between many software programs. Someone using one program to create a file need not worry that his intended recipient have that same program, because PDFs just require a free software program to open. On occasion, it may seem like a PDF is just as hard to open as a native file created in that proprietary software, but one of a variety of factors may contribute to the unreadability problem.

One of the most common reasons a PDF is unreadable -- and the easiest to fix -- is that the person trying to open the PDF doesn't have the software to do so. To open a PDF requires the free downloadable program Reader, created and distributed by Adobe, which also makes the PDF-creation software Acrobat. A person who doesn't have Reader installed won't see the familiar red-and-black PDF icon; they'll see a white box symbolizing that the computer doesn't know how to read the file. b> Zoom b> Although it seems quite obvious, a person's screen resolution may have everything to do with why a PDF appears unreadable. Since PDFs are often scans or saved files of standard 8.5-by-11-inch paper, small fonts and occasionally handwriting can get be scaled to tiny dimensions when the sheet is viewed full . Zoomed out, a heavily typed or scrawled PDF may appear as a bunch of jumbled black dots and lines instead of the clear text it would be when zoomed in. Conversion b> Even if you have the Reader software installed, trying to open a PDF in a program that doesn't allow it will cause problems. For example, the Reader software doesn't let you edit a PDF -- you need Acrobat for that -- but you can still use other programs to do things such as redacting, or making black lines to obscure information. You can open a PDF in a program such as Adobe Photoshop and have the PDF be completely readable. On the other hand, if you try to open a PDF in Windows Paint, the operating system's native graphics tool, it will be unreadable because Paint does not accept PDF files. b> Missing Elements b> Something that appears perfectly readable on one person's screen may look entirely unreadable on another, solely because of what's missing from the file. In some cases, a PDF that looks jumbled is a result of missing fonts. While it may seem simple to just create a PDF from whatever document you're working on, if the person who receives your PDF doesn't have those fonts installed, the PDF may be unreadable. You can combat this one of two ways -- try to use universal fonts, such as Helvetica; or take the extra steps to embed the fonts into the PDF. This requires use of Distiller, also an Adobe product. An unreadable PDF may also be missing the password or certificate to render the document readable. Contact the person who created the PDF to inquire whether he locked it with an encryption. Encryption is removable with a key or password. Hope this helps.

PDF encryption, set PDF password and recover PDF password

PDF encryptionGenerally, PDF files are with a password called User Password, which is used to open the file and view the document. To encrypt a PDF password does not simply mean you can’t open and view the document, but PDF files have five to seven encryption ways to protect the file for office needs. Owner password, the other password of PDF files, is another crucial PDF password, which is to protect the file from maybe being copied (to Clipboard), printed, or modified, etc. So, in speaking of PDF password, it doesn’t necessary mean the one which you use to open the file.
PDF encryption largely relies on the sophisticated algorithm that hardly to be reversed. For example, you are easy to calculate that 1000 plus 1 is 1001, however, the reverse is seemed impossible, for 1001 can be an answer of countless calculations. PDF encryption works in the similar way. In this sense, given a password, it’s easy to deduce and decipher some data; however, the reverse PDF password recovery seems impossible.
Generally speaking PDF encryption with 128 bits key value is much more secure than that of 32 bits. PDF encryption is accomplished by a key value, either 128 or 32 bits in size. When using the key, all the bytes are changed (unless they are decoded back with the same key) into meaningless codes, and the file is impossible to be opened. Only the meaningless codes are calculated back using the correct value is it possible to get the correct password and open the file. 128 bits has a lot more possible values than the one with 32 bits, so it is much more secure. If your password is forgotten and intend to recover PDF password, PDF Password Unlocker software could be faster, for it supports 128 bits encryption, either 128 bits RC4 or 128 bits AES encryption.

PDF files are composed with objects, like image Objects, graphic Objects, and text Objects, etc. The key is calculated for each PDF Object in the PDF file using local data, which is much hard to crack, as the key keeps changing.
Set and remove PDF passwordsAdd a PDF Password1. Click the Secure button pdf-encryption-and-pdf-password-recovery_clip_image002.jpg in the Tasks toolbar, and choose Password Encrypt.
2. Click “Yes” to the prompt about changing the security, and if necessary, type the Permissions password that lets you change security settings. If you don’t know the password, contact the author of the PDF.
3. In the Password Security - Settings dialog box, set the security options as desired, confirm the password, click OK, and then click OK again.
4. Save the document to apply the security settings.
Note: You can also restrict editing capabilities when you certify a document, or when you apply a policy to a PDF.
Remove PDF passwords and security settingsYou can remove PDF passwords and security policies from an open PDF if you have the permissions to do so. If the PDF is secured with a security policy that resides on a server, the changes can be made only by the author of the policy or by a server administrator.
1. Do one of the following: Click the Secure button pdf-encryption-and-pdf-password-recovery_clip_image002_0000.jpg in the Tasks toolbar, and choose Remove Security.
Type your password, and click Yes to the prompt about removing the security.
In the Security tab of the Document Properties dialog box, choose No Security from the Security Method menu.
2. When prompted, specify the Permissions password, and then click OK. Recover PDF password in case you forgot it.Every coin has two sides. Even the PDF document is strongly encrypted with passwords, it is impossible to insure that it is secure. Once you forgot PDF password, the data in the encrypted PDF file are on the risk of unavailability. Unless fortunately the password knocks your memory again, you got the data lost or you have to give up the document eventually. With the ever-growing of strong encryption algorithms, decryption algorithms gradually come into existing, too. Though the cracking is far more difficulty than ever before, it is still of help to those expecting to recover PDF password and access the password protected PDF file. Take PDF Password Unlocker, a popular PDF password recovery software, for example, it has adopted the advanced decryption algorithms to crack 40-bit RC4, 128-bit RC4, 128-bit AES, and 256-bit AES encrypted passwords with 3 attack methods, Dictionary attack, Brute-force attack, and Brute-force with Mask attack

It keeps saying that ntoskrn1.exe is missing

It is pretty much crashed....hard. Might want to reload the OS. Yes you can recover from that, but it is not worth the time and frustration to do it...Provided you can afford to lose whatever you had on the primary partition (C:\) drive. Let me know if you need other asst. It is a little complicated to explain. How many machines is this affecting? All of your E-Machines?

Cannot download adobe, (or any) files and get following message:

The problem lies in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Sometimes the index.dat file can become damaged.
If this occurs, you'll have to delete the index.dat file and restart your computer.
Then you'll be able to download files correctly again.
Follow the steps below to delete this file.

1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click on Tools, Click on Internet Options
3) On the General tab under Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files
4) Click Ok when it asks if you want to delete the files
5) Under the History section on the General tab, click Clear History, then click Ok
6) Close Internet Explorer
7) Log off the current user and Log onto another user account such as Administrator
8) Click on Start, Run
9) Type CMD and Press Enter to open a command prompt
10) Change directories to the Temporary Internet Files directory by typing the following command,
(substituting the correct drive letter and the word username with the correct userName).

cd drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Example: cd c:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

11) type del index.dat and press Enter
12) Type Exit and press Enter to close the command prompt
13) Restart your computer

Once the computer has been restarted, open a web page with a link to a download.
Click on the link and download the file. It should now work.

Starting the computer

ok what file does it say is missing?

and do you have a windows xp cd at all or do you know someone with one?'
because it may be that you might just have a file system error on your hard drive and since windows can not read the file it thinks it is missing when in fact it is probably still there

booting the computer from the windows xp cd and going into the recovery console you can do a disk file system repair by typing this at the recovery console command prompt CHKDSK C: /R

that will start the chkdsk utility but once you start it you MUST allow it to finish since even if it apears to be stuck it is not... and it may take several hours to complete depending on the size of the drive and the amount of files.. (interupting the CHKDSK utility before it finishes can actually damage your drive depending on which phase it is in at the time so please be patient and allow it to finish)

once chkdisk is complete remove the cd and type EXIT and it will reboot and windows should then be able to read the file just fine

is the file that it needs called : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\system ?
that is part of your windows registry
the dsk chk utility should be able to repair it but in the rare event that it does not then you will need to do a repair install of windows.

but there is one more last rewsort way of replacing that file if the dskchk doesnt repair it but best to try CHKDSK utility fitst since alternate method will require reinstalling most of your hardware drivers and theres a possibility of losing your account and access to your documents and so on if encryption is enabled because the only real backup copy of that file is probably the first default file that windows created durring install that is located in the C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR folder
and it is rather a pain to restore it which might not work anyway if there is a bad sector on your drive in the c:\windows\system32\config folder location
so CHKDSK utility is best option.

at least that is what i would do (i have fixed this exact situation countless times with CHKDSK utility )

Recover an unfinished Excel document

If you opened this directly from the email then it would be saved back into a folder for temporary files, probably somewhere in the "Temporary Internet Files" Folder. Excel would normally remember where it had saved the file so first open Excel and look for recent files in the File menu. A search for its name (including hidden and system files option in XP) might reveal it. If that doesn't work then give details as to email program, Excel version and Windows version.
