Question about Epson Stylus Photo R800 InkJet Printer

Prints come out with faint horizontal "stripes"

Recently, I bought new cartridges to replace ones that were out.  I use standard Epson cartridges.  Problem now is, when I print out my color copies of images, there are what I call faint, regularly spaced horizontal "stripes" about 1/8" thick (4 cm) going across the images, any image.  Any idea why?
I checked the ink to see if any cartridges are out, and the printer indicates that they are ok.
Thanks!

I looked up about the Nozzle Auto Check in the printer manual. For Mac OS X it says:

Open Appl. folder, select Epson Printer Utility, select SP R800, click OK,, then select Auto Nozzle Check and Cleaning.

First, I couldn't find anything under Appln. folder for Epson., and couldn't find it using Finder, Find file. The only way I got a menu for it was to print something on the Epson. Under that menu there is nothing like it says in the manual instructions. I know it has been done before by someone who helped me some time ago.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Thank you CoolGuy, I followed your instructions and located the Nozzle Check. I'll try this out and see if that works. Makes sense, at any rate!

I'm still in the process of running the print utility tests on the printer, especially the two on print-head cleaning. Seems that print head(s) are clogged. I ran the print-head alignment test, but I don't think this is the problem. At any rate, keeps telling me I need more ink. Yikes. Expensive! I keep putting more cartridges in (according to the ink-out indicator) and then then the red light goes off. Then I repeat the print head test, tells me I need more ink. I now am unable to find cartridges in the local stores I used to buy from so I have to wait til I get some shipped from an online seller. The tests are showing breaks in the color test patterns on two of the test utilities and I've run these maybe up to five times or so now. I've turned the printer off for now. I'll keep you posted!

If your prints are too light or contain white spots or horizontal lines thn:

the signs point to a clogged print head—especially if you haven’t
used your printer for some time. Clean the head by running the
printer’s utility program. If you can’t find it, try accessing it from
Printer Setup Utility (/Applications/Utilities). Select your printer
from the list, and choose Configure Printer from the Printers menu. You may need to clean the head several times for best
results. Be sure to print a test sheet between cleanings to avoid
    damaging the nozzles.
If the cleaning routine doesn’t work, try
leaving your printer turned off overnight. The next day, run the
cleaning process again. The dried ink will soften, making it easier for
    the printer to clean.
If you have a chronic problem with clogged
heads, make a habit of turning your printer off at night. (Turn it off
at the printer, not at the power strip.) In some models, doing so will
engage a capping mechanism that protects the nozzles.
    Most
printer utilities will let you print a test sheet that uses all the
printer’s ink cartridges. If you haven’t printed a color image in a
while, print a test sheet before printing a large file—it wastes less
    ink than a bad print.

    Vertical lines are jagged.
This is usually a sign that the print head is out of alignment. There’s
not much you can do to avoid this problem—all print heads become
misaligned over time. Your printer utility should include an option for
    correcting the problem.

The printhead has either become too clogged to flush out with with the internal cleaning operation (which uses a LOT of ink), OR, the nozzles are not firing. If after several cleaning operations there is still no significant improvement, you will need to replace the print head. I see this frequently with Canon and Epson, and Brother inkjet printers. Usually, it is due to leaving the printer idle for too long, or removing a cartridge and not replacing it right away. The air gets to the residual puddle of ink in the head and dries it.

You can find the replacement print head by Google searching "MP830 print head". Prices can vary from around $70 - $90. Changing it out is fairly simple. You only need to lift a lever that holds the head in place. Make certain that it is squarely seated, and then run a few pages of a color document, or do a couple of standard cleaning operations to "prime" the head.

Make sure the hed is NEW and not used or "refurbished". Here is one source on eBay that sells it for $78.00:

Try to reseat your cartridges. Unplug and replug your printer into the power source to reset itself. If that doesn't help, try to clean your cartridges and check if print quality improves. If you're using Windows, go to Start -> Programs -> Lexmark X74-X75 -> Lexmark X74-X75 Solution Center -> Maintenance -> Clean print nozzles to fix horizontal streaks.

Bought new ink, black not working

Did you use Epson Genuine Cartridges?
ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Cartridges. !!!!!!!!
That sounds like your problem.

In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. I also Purchased a Brother MFC-240C All-In-One InkJet Printer. That also does not like Generic Print Cartridges. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc.

These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.

I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.

That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, and some are refillable. Some you can refill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......

I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. .

IF YOU ARE USING GENERIC CARTRIDGES, MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DISABLE THE INK MONITOR.

This is the only advice I can give you.

The next step would be to disassemble the Epson, and clean the Pads/Heads. Click on link below.:

Printing Streaky

Most likely the printer has been sitting for along time not used or you have used cheap replacement ink. Epsons are notorious for clogging the jets with cheap ink. unfortunately replacing the ink cartridges will not help because the jets are seperate from them. If cleaning numerous times does not work your next best bet is to buy a cleaning ink cartridge for your model. otherwise youll need a new printhead or new printer. If your going to use cheap replacement cartridges stay away from epson.
