Whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator relay compressor?

Hi. My 'fridge isn't cold. Everything seems to match the description for an issue with the relay compressor. It seems to be working, light's on, fan's on, sounds like it's getting cold, motor runs, then clicks, turns off, repeat every three or four minutes, inside is warm. I took the cover off and vacuumed out the vent really well, then flipped the breaker leaving it off for a couple of minutes before restarting. Nothing. I turned the temperature dials up down and all around. Nothing. How do I find this magic box to try triggering the switch? Not even Whirlpool's site has the manual available. Best of all, it's sunday, the food's warm (just went shopping of course!) and there is not a repair tech in town available 'til tomorrow? Please help! Just in case, the model numbers GD2NHGXLQ00 made 08/02. Thanks!

p.s. should i just turn it off it the meantime, the fan just seems to be making it warmer?

I'm in Philadelphia, so it's pretty chilly outside, about 45
degrees. The 'fridge hasn't been moved at all in quite a long
time (I think I moved it a couple inches forward to paint last year but
that's about it). It's in the kitchen, ceremic tile floor with a
full wall on the freezer and back side, cabinets above (with about a
four inch clearance) that extend across the back third of it's depth
and a counter/dishwasher about an inch away that's about half it's
height, same depth on the "fresh foods" side. It's been packed a
little full lately, it's always pretty full but maybe even more so the
last two weeks or so. We also recently started accumulating more
stuff on top, recently the available 2/3's have been pretty covered
with cereral boxes and that sort of lightweight stuff primarily.

I tried to shut it down again, this time I turned the breaker off and
left it off for 2-3 hours and I removed more than half the
contents, cleared space from the top (ceiling) of the top shelf in the
fresh side and removed nearly everything from the top of it. I
left only a largish metal serving bowl filled with some really light
items, but made sure it was all the way towards the back of the freezer
side as it seemed like the main temperature gauge was likely in the
    "ceiling" of the fridge side.

This time I turned it back on (set to the coldest settings on both
sides) and it stopped "clicking" and seeming to turn on and off so
often. It also seems like the air coming in (on the freezer side)
is colder and it smells a little like coolant (not any more than
usual). The vent area from the freezer to the fridge side seems
to be working well. And I double checked the door switches (to
show whether it's open or closed) on both sides and they seem
    fine.

It feels a little colder. A little. It's been six hours since I've
turned it back on and glass on the fresh side feels cool to the touch
(instead of tepid) but that's about it. The ice bags I put in
this morning are still (mostly) solid.

Now it's running, clicking and stopping only to repeat again every
couple minutes. So the "okay, maybe it's working hope" lasted
about an hour or so after I turned the power back on.

Also, about two or three days ago I noticed a humming one evening like
it was constantly re-setting. Like the sound it makes as the
water spout refilling directly after use. Except it would hum,
for maybe a second or two, stop completely, for less than a second,
then repeat. No clicking. Different than the sound of it
turning on repeatedly now. Also within this week we noticed a
electric smell one evening. Like a overheating electric
smell..... it was just that one time (though it was quite significant)
we open the windows, unsure that it was definitely in our house (we
have a rowhome in the city) and it disappaited and we didn't smell it
    again after that.

Okay, that was a lot of information! I hope it's helpful (and
pertinant!). Thanks so much in advance! I'm feeling at my
    wits end! Thanks!

The tech has (finally) came. He removed the backing and manually
metered the compressor. Turns out to indeed be the starter.
Unfortunately, it's not the a "spare change" repair ($180).
Alternatively, it's repairable and NOT the compressor, so we don't need
    to purchase a new unit.

    Thanks for all the help!

  • dutch10 Sep 27, 2008

I have the same problem. My compressor cycles on and the cycles off after about 10 seconds. It keeps happening about every 5 minutes. I'm hearing the same sound. Does it sound like the thermostat or the relay?

Sounds like the relay switch. Light works, fan works, but is not cold. Also if you smell a burnt metal very strong smell. Relay switch must have burnt.

Turn it off for an hour or so and give the coils time to thaw just in case they somehow froze up. also if the frig was tilted in the wrong direction (which it doesnt sound like it was since it has food in it!!!) it could need time to let the refrigerant and oil settle back into the compressor.

where are you located (cold or warm climate)?
and where is the frig located (in your home)?

I'd say it could be time to call a service guy ... or if you know someone handy with appliances who would be willing to look at it. Its extremely hard to diagnose refrigerent problems without being at the unit itself because there are SO many different factors. it could be a bum switch or thermometer that helps the computer know whats going on with the mechanicals and electrionics of the whole system. Because of the chemicals and high pressures often involved with and the very delicate sequence of operations necessary for optimal performance refrigeration equipment there are so many safety devices like high and low pressure cutoffs temperature monitoring equipment etc etc etc. without being there to put my meter on it ... i dont watn to point you too far in the wrong direction.

the burning electrical smell scares me a little. hopefully it was just some dust or something that landed on the hot compressor, but it very well could have been a small internal computer board finishing its service life or even worse ... the refrigerent in the compressor getting too hot and burning (not fire burning, but breaking down burning). normally you wouldnt smell this until the compressor is removed becuase it is a closed system.

Hope you dont get too frustrated with it. I know how applicance problems can be such a PITA. Good luck. Sorry I couldnt help more.

You probably have an issue with the compressor or components attached to the compressor (e.g.: relay, overload and capacitor (if applicable)). Contact an appliance service company.

Refrigerator won't get cold

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.

Freezer defrosted everything- fridge seems cold-

Sounds like the overload/relay is bad . Pt# 2188831 . This is the part attached to the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires connected to it . Easily replaceable . Also , make sure the coils under the front of the refrig at the bottom , is clean of dust , lint , pet hair , etc.

I did some research online, and read that the Start Relay is most commonly the problem. My husband bought the part, (about $50) and reattached it to the side of the compressor....and was cold immediately! apparently a very common problem on these fridges.

Whirlpool gold refridgerator light not working and is making funny noise

Had the identical symptoms with my Whirlpool Gold GS6SHEXNB00 side-by-side refrigerator. Had a technician come on site, indicated it was the "circuit board/ timer" (Whirlpool part # 1394052). Board is accessible from behind fridge (lower left side in a white plastic housing to left of compressor).

Swapped the board out (noticed a scorched circuit on the old circuit board). Lightbulbs now work, temperature readouts also good to go.
