Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Backing up my computer

I have backed up my lap top hard drive once about a year ago and my my book essentials worked fine. I haven't done it since. I now connect the drive to my laptop via USB port and it does not automatically back up my laptop or open up a window to allow me to do this, as it should. Any thoughts??

This hard drive maybe still under warranty, I recommend you get a replacement and back up your data before the hard drive fails completely.

I've had my external hard drive My Book Essential for a while now and had no problems with it until now. I would usually plug it in and the pop up screens would ask what you would like to do like...

The fact that it displays a '0% used' indicator probably means that somehow the data that you have hitherto stored on your external hard drive has been erased. This might not necessarily be the case, so don't panic yet.

The first thing I would try doing is reinstalling any software that came with your WD My Book. Not many external HDDs require additional software to run properly, but if yours does, then I strongly recommend reinstalling that first. I would then try using Windows Disk Manager to see if your computer is recognizing the G: drive as a hard drive, because I have had to use disk manager when I've added additional internal hard drives to my computer. If neither of these work [or you could not find the CD your My Book came with] I would search around online for driver or software updates available for your device.

One thing that I noticed while typing my suggestion for you is that before you attempting using the back up feature on your My Book, the drive for the My Book was (G:) but after you attempted the back up process the drive is indicated as (H:). I think that what might have happened was that when you attempted backing up the My Book, it was partitioned into a storage section (G:) and a section in which the backup data is stored (H:). If you can find and access it, the (G:) drive is likely to still contain all the data that you previously assigned to it.

If this doesn't help, I apologize, but I sincerely hope that your problem will be resolved.

My 1TB western digital hard drive was working fine hours ago but all of a sudden there was a problem playing a few music files off of it. I closed the applications and tried again and kept having the...

1. Unplug it from the computer and from the power cord. Wait 5 minutes for the drive to cool up a bit.
2. Plug it again to the power and to the computer - using OTHER USB PORT, (a rear port - at the back of the computer is better. Make sure the computer is already powered up and logged on).

If the problem persists, it probably means that the hard drive is dead, sorry.
To make further testing/fixing, try using HDD Regenerator. You might need to take apart the hard drive's case to use the drive with this software, which is not that easy, to my own experience - but definitely doable!

Good luck!

Western DIgital 500 GB litght flashes but not working

I discovered that the wrong power adapter was plugged into the Western Digital My Book which is why it was blinking two times a second and fried it. Plugged in a 24v instead of the 12vThe tech support person at Western Digital ignored the information of the blinking light. I fixed the hard drive issue by removing the cover (no easy task) and installing it as a slave drive on my computer. I am backing up that hard drive using another Western Digital My Book.

I would suggest to anyone who has the problem of frying their Western Digital hard drive to make it a secondary drive on your computer. My item was under warranty, but all they would have done is replace the product and not recovered the data. They gave me references on whom to send the problem hard drive to.

There are a couple of videos on youtube showing how to remove the cover. I wound up using credit cards and a DVD to pry it apart. I was fearful that a screwdriver could create noticeable tampering.
