Question about Whirlpool 21.7 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator ED22PQXF

1 Answer

My refrigerator is not functioning

The refrigerator has power and every few seconds it makes noise to start a cycle but nothing happens. The both sides are cold, however the freezer section is not keeping items cold and the IceMaker (even though it is on) is not making any ice. I know when the freezer was working properly, when it made the normal noise, you could tell when water being supplied to the ice maker and i don't hear that either.
I have cleaned the coils with a vacuum but no help.

I have a whirlpool side-by-side fridge which is about either years old.
thank you for all your help.

Re: my refrigerator is not functioning

Sounds like your compressor is overheated. this could be caused from one or more of these things since you have already cleaned out the condenser.

  • low on refrigerant
  • compressor burning out
  • start components for compressor are bad( start relay,or run capacitor)

Magic chef 10 cu fridge makes ticking noise but works fine

Some times refrigerators make a noise that sounds like a tick. It could be caused from the refrigerant flowing through the lines. This usually happens when the refrigerator first starts up and goes away after a few minutes. the other possibility is a fan motor blade taping the shroud from time to time. The refrigerant issue is not something that can be fixed. The fan blade issue could be fixed by moving the fan blade back or froward on the shaft a slight amount. If you have a 10 cu ft refrigerator it may not have a fan.

Fridge cycles on and off every few seconds

sounds like the compressor can't start. could be the compressor itself, or the capacitor that kicks it on

Hotpoint future freezer red light stays on and motor makes buzz noise every few mins but only for about two seconds.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. Your hearing the compressor Thermal overload cycle every few minutes for no more than 45 seconds. The compressor is not starting at all or it is not cycling from the start winding to the run winding so the KliXon thermal overload is tripping. That switching of windings is done by the PTC relay mounted on the side of the compressor. The Compresor part number is EMY32CLC. PTC relays can be found here: You will have to match your relay to the image.

I would recommend using the phone locally to purchase the relay AFTER performing the following.
POWER OFF / Unplugged WAIT 30 minutes for the compressor to cool and the coolant pressures to stabilize. After 30 minutes plug in the unit and see if the compressor starts.

POWER OFF / Unplugged
IF after 30 minutes the compressor does not restart....
1. Read the pins of the compressor to the case of the compressor. No grounds allowed.
2. Read pin 1 to pin 2 (on 2 pin compressor) you should read resistance.
3. If you have a 3 pin compressor only 2 of the 3 pins will read to each other at any given time. One for start winding and one for run winding with 3rd pin being common.

A locked compressor rotor/armature will also cause the compressor not to start. A locked rotor requires compressor replacement. (Fingers crossed lets hope that the rotor is not locked!)

Hopefully your unit will restart. A momentary loss of power will cause a compressor to hot cycle and not restart. All it takes is about a 8 second power loss to put the compressor into this no start frenzy. Do the 30 min no power thing and see what happens. (maybe save your self lots of money.)

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Maytag refrigerator clicking noise and stopped working

How long a period of time have you noticed this noise? If it just started and the refrigerator just stopped it could have entered its defrost cycle. When the defrost heaters come on you may hear the heat causing some expansion. After a few minutes(18-22) the defrost cycle ends and the refrigerator will restart.

Side by side stopped working but clicling noises every second two.

Ok the motherboard is malfunctioning. Ive observed this exact problem before. Replace the board and all will be normal again. If you keep lettig it click and click it may finally kill that relay that you descibed to me or even worse the compressor itself.

Side by side stopped working but clicling noises every second two.

Read, this model posted has a main board in back that controls the refer. Your problem sounds like the overload and relay on the compressor but you need to do a test to verify. On the main board in back there is a blue harness, 3 pronged, that is marked line, defr and comp. Lower left hand corner. You need to get a jumper wire with alligator clips and with the plug out, jump line to comp. Now plug it back in, this will send 120V directly to the compressor. See if it starts. If not and it does it clicking thing, chances are it's the overload and relay, or the compressor itself. You have five years warranty on the compresser. If it starts, it's the board it's the board giving you the problem. This of course is for the GSH model back.
