My Lacie 500GB drive shuts my laptop down when i connect it.

It was working fine one evening and when i connected it the next day it caused an error on my laptop resulting in it restarting. My laptop works as usual when the drive is not connected but the same thing happens whenever i connect it.

I managed to sort it. I plugged my drive into another computer and deleted recently downloaded files, after that it worked fine with my laptop. Reckon you should try it on a mates computer and see what you can do.

Similar issue: my notebook hangs instead of restarting. i thought its the usb2.0 of my rather old(3yr) notebook. but i bought a cheap usb box for my old 120G hdd and it plug-n-play like a charm on the same old notebook/same usb port. quite frustrated with this Lacie 500G beast.

so i ended up backing up my notebook using the 1-click backup of Lacie but using my old 120G hdd instead of the new Lacie500G. but then, search as i would through the Lacie documentation, i see no mention of how to restore the data... still looking...

Try connecting the LaCie to another computer. If this still does not work then the LaCie is faulty.

LaCie 500GB portable hard drive is giving error 43. It was working fine for a few weeks and now I can't get into it from either of my computers. I tried uninstalling the USB Controllers but still same...

The symptoms indicate there is a problem with the drive, how it is connected, or with the computer used for troubleshooting. The next best step is to change physical variables, and find a simpler problem than a broken product.
  • Change the data cable (USB, FireWire, Ethernet, etc.) A failure in the cable can cause this issue.
  • Change the external power supply or cable. If a different LaCie product is available, borrow the power cabling from that unit to see if the problem is in that component. On drives that are powered via USB or Firewire, try using the included power sharing cable and connect it to a second port.
  • Change the computer you are using. Computer problems can manifest themselves in many ways. Even if the computer appears to be working properly, this is a worthwhile test.
Then run

Hi if I connect my lacie on the laptop it doesn't

That's why it's called 'Plug and Pray.'
Try plugging in the drive while your laptop is off, then power it up.
Watch the lower right quadrant of the Desktop to see if Windows pops up a box that says 'found new hardware.' If it does, Win may have a driver in its library and install it.

Lacie hard drive nonfunctional

I ran into this issue this week with my lacie big disk 500G external. Unit would power on when plugged into a pc blue light would flash and nothing no connection ding from windows.
Blue front light would flash repetedly slight ticking sound from drives but no connection i finally fixed this and gained access to my data by opening up the case and pluging my pc 12v connectors into both drives to power them up but leaving them connected to the lacie internals worked instantly and ive since copyed all my data off my 500 and will just transplant the drives to internal use on my pc. you cannot connect the drives internally and then copy the data due to the fact that they are raid 0 stripped drives so this hybrid setup works if your external case isnt powering up the drive correctly as mine wasnt.

LaCie 500GB external HDD stoped working ?

It sounds like its an internal problem with the pcb board inside, which may not be an actual problem with the hdd it self but the mother advice would be to change the board that links between the hdd and the usb cable.
