Question about Panasonic CT-36SX31 36" TV

2 Answers

My Panasonic CT-36SX31 picture has an hour shape

The tv runs well, it has a clear crisp picture. The colors, tone and contrasts are great and the brightness is still perfect. But within the last few months the picture had bowed at the right and left sides so that it has an hour glass look. The bowing is semetrical and extends in a couple of inches in on both sides. I have tried some of the typical adjustments outlined in the service manual using the remote control and can not correct the problem. I have been told there might be something wrong with something to do with the "high voltage" or something with the "pin cushioning"? I am not sure what either of those things are or what relevance they would have. I am hoping to find a simple way of diagnosing the problem and perhaps purchasing a replacement part.

I know the tv is an older model, but I would like to continue to use it. I have access to panasonic parts and someone who knows his way around electronic equipment who will work on it if I can diagnose the problem. You may contact me via e-mail at ancient_breed

My old Panasonic 32" TV (couldn't find model, but was purchased in late '95, so is probably the smaller version of the one mentioned in the problem) is doing the same thing (hourglass shaped picture). But the picture snaps back to "normal" shape after about 10 minutes. I'd be interested to know if there is a solution because now I'm shopping around for a new TV.

i too have this problem. It just started... same exact model tv and same exact problem. Is this a costly repair? I would rather get a new TV (and a lighter one!) than spend $100+ in getting this one fixed.

QUESTION: The picture went to a funnel or hourglass shape and a single line of text apppears as three (1 blue 1 yellow 1 red )

ANSWER: George. Have not viewed this problem for a very long time. How old is your set? CT-36??-? what the rest of the model number. Could be the main AC line filter. They were known to go bad and give this symptom, but I'm talking 15 maybe 20 years.

Well, the SX31 and TAU series chassis had some problems with a capacitor that creates pincushion symptoms. It is C832, a 220uF / 16Volt Capacitor. That would be the first thing to do and to replace. If not this we can dig deeper if you like. Let me know.

Take a look around (say, within 12 feet of) the TV... anything that can generate an electrical field? Microwave... refridgerator... old school stereo speakers...

Pin cushioned is a term applied to a picture that's doing what you described. Adjustments to correct that are typically found in computer monitors.

I have an identical television to yours and that adjustment isn't available. You could try degausing, but I doubt that works.

Color settings for an older panasonic tv trying to adjust the color setting for this older panasonic tv, it seems the dark colors are really dark and there faces are really red. Model# CT-32g19j

This is not a projection set; but a picture tube set or CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology. If the set is working correctly you should be able to go into the menu and set the color, brilliance and contrast to get the right color and picture intensity. If the controls don't give you what is correct viewing it may be over age and need an adjustment of the internal chroma circuits - which may cost more than the set is worth since it is quite old. Hope this helsp.

My Panasonic CT-32SC14 takes about 5-30 minutes for the picture to be displayed, and the color is red hued/high contrast. Adjusting the color controls helps, but its not a great picture. The longer the set...

You have to check the picture tube base socket. After some years of use the contacts of the base socket will become bad (normally the screen pin and focus pin). Just replace the CRT socket it will solve your problem. You can find the CRT base socket on circut board at the end of picture tube neck. Pull the circuit board straight to back,do not shack. It will damge the picture tube pins. And replace the socket with the same type. You will get it from any of the electronic spare part shop near to you. Remember one thing remove the socket from the circuit and keep it with you as sample when you are going to purchase a new one, Because there are different types of CRT sockets are avilable. Purchase one which is similar.

What is the proper calibration settings for a panasonic tc-p50s2n. I have used it for over a 100 hours

Do you have access to a test pattern or color bar ? .If you have a THX certified DVD ( some Walt Disney movies ) it will have calibration setup guide in the DVD menu.Or else you have to buy a calibration DVD if you are serious about your TV setup.
First you have to set the contrast and brightness using the Grey-scale pattern. Seven set of vertical bars slowly progressing from white to black. If set right you should be able to make out all the seven bars with out each merging ( or overlapping ) into the other. You will be able to see the line of demarcation between each vertical bars. Then set the color to taste.
If you do not want to purchase the above mentioned DVD disc a close setup figure for your Panasonic TV would be
Picture Mode = Standard ( Normal )
Picture ( Contrast ) ---- 50
Brightness ---------------- 50
Color ------------------------ 33
Sharpness ---------------- 50
Hue ------------------------- In the middle
This setting should give you a decent picture quality assuming your TV is new.

Fuzzy picture, color and volume comes and goes

the main chip in the TV that controls all these options (sound - sharpness etc...) you will need to bring this TV into a repair shop - the transformer that blew up caused a voltage surge that fried this chip

Bad color

If it is a glass crt then you need to have the set demagnatized with a demagnatizing coil. All tv shops have one. This is worth fixing and usually at the price of a service call.
