Re: Printer says there is no paper, therefore it won't...
This is unfortunately very common issue about MFC-8460N, There are few steps you can try, Set to factory default (Reset), move the roller manually so sensor will detect new position or locate the paper detector and bypass it. There are many users have been complaining regarding the issue that you have, Before try the troubleshooting that i have suggested please do call the hotline of Brotherif you have ongoing warranty. Some cases Brother accepts their fault on this known issues and provide solution (can be free of charge). As an experienced expert I suggest you to contact Brother (1-800-276-7746).

Pl. detach the paper try and see bellow the printer base a small plastic lever is there, push that lever upward, if printer goes ready, check the floor of the printer and tray else some mechanical adjustment is required or put a bunch of paper.
Make sure you have plenty of paper in the tray, this may help the printer pick it up. if you don't have lots of paper add an A4 sized magazine, book or old printed paper in there, to full the tray.
Is there a way to manually insert the paper from the back, some printers have this feature.
Ok, firstly some may say turn off the printer before removing the paper, but I find it easier with the printer on. (hopefully you know abit about electrical dangers :) This is because when you start pulling the paper the printer will automatically rotate to help get the paper out.
Ok the mistake many people make when dealing with a paper jam, is they try and pull the paper out from the wrong end. You should therefore open the cap of the printer, (same cap where you change the toner, or sometimes you can open the back of the printer). then pull, preferabble using two tweezers, one on each end of the paper towards where the paper would go if it were printing normally. i.e. pull towards the exit of the paper if printing.
Hi thanks for asking please check the printer to see if anything stock inside for example make sure there is no paper stick up inside printer. If there is paper stick up in it you should carefully remove it restart your printer and then try to print,so you can see the response of the printer.
This usually happens when the paper tray is set to the incorrect paper size.
This printer determines what size paper is installed in it by the little "fingers" on the left side of the tray. When you adjust the paper tray, it determines how those fingers are positioned, and therefore, how the switch reads the paper size.
If the tray setting is off, even by one little click, then the machine may read the paper size as other then letter. If this happens, you send a letter size job to the printer, and it doesnt think it has letter size paper, it will tell you to put letter paper in the MPF feeder.
If the tray is definately set to letter, but the machine still thinks it does not have letter, then the tray or the switch that reads the tray is defective, but 99% of the time it is just the tray is not set correctly.
The MPF door can be open or closed 100% of the time with NO EFFECT on how the printer works.
Hi there it may just be that the paper tray springs are not pushing the paper higher enough not making contact with the paper detect sensor arm. Or the sensor arm is broken and will need replacing. Check the tray springs also check the sensor arm you will see it if you remove the cassette and look inside there will be a black plastic lever hanging down when you put paper in this lever should go up as the paper acts as a barrier thus telling the machine that there is paper in it.
