Error Message:
Windows Update Error: 0x80070424. Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.
Translation:
Your system runs Windows XP and you can’t obtain Windows updates because of an error that occurs each time you visit the Windows Update site.
Solution:
Because the problem may be the result of an external contaminant, first scan your system for viruses and run an antispyware application, such as Spybot Search & Destroy (free; www.safer-networking.org) or Ad-Aware SE Personal (free; www.lavasoft.com). If these steps don’t fix the error, you can try one of two workaround solutions.
The first one involves editing the Registry, so make a backup of your system before modifying any Registry settings because editing them incorrectly could leave your system inoperable. Then access the Registry by clicking Run from the Start menu, typing regedit in the field, and clicking OK. In the Registry Editor, locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\WINDOWS key and select the CSDVersion value from the right pane. Next, right-click the value, select Modify, type 0 in the Value Data field, and click OK.
After exiting the Registry and rebooting the PC, try to access the Windows Update site. If you can’t, try the second workaround solution. Open the Start menu and click All Programs, Accessories, and Notepad. In Notepad, type the following commands (Smart Computing subscribers can access this article online and copy/paste this text), pressing ENTER after each line:
cd /d %SystemRoot%\system32

Next, save the document as Filefix.bat and close Notepad. Find and double-click this file. Doing so re-registers the necessary system files and ensures Internet Explorer is working as it should. You should be able to access the Windows Update site and download the required updates for your PC.

Some spyware, adware, viruses block the windwows update sites.

If this doesn't work
The above explanation was for a previous Version of BITS but, there has been
an update for BITS since Vista came out.
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939159>

Is BITS disabled ? It can be set to Manual and the system will update
successfully but, will not update if BITS is Disabled.
Suggest you run the BITS Repair Tool to see if that helps resolve the issue
after installing the update for it:

Ensure you do not have "Vundo". Clean it up if you do.

It seems possible that your Windows installation has been deliberately
damaged by a trojan (Vundo, along any uninvited guests. (SDBot and ZLOB, all
protected by a rootkit.)) so as to prevent you updating your system or
removing the trojan.

Your first priority must be to cleanse your PC of all malware.

A very good antimalware app is SUPERAntiSpyware.

There is a free version (on demand scanning only), the paid for version
includes active monitoring, similar to Windows defender:

The trial version of SUPERAntiSpyware Pro (SAS):

Can't fix BITS - Windows Update
<http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=US&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&p=1&tid=307d2 1a2-eb9a-4859-b139-78997305deff&mid=307d21a2-eb9a-4859-b139-78997305deff>

This will give you a starting point for your troubleshooting anyway.

Please let us know if the problem remains

I hope this helps (it should)!

Download this "Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)"

from link below

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B93356B1-BA43-480F-983D-EB19368F9047&displaylang=en

It should fix your problem if you are using Genuine Windows.

Error code 643

Try this for starters:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100/

Basically, it involves un-installing .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service pack
1.

Then download and use (Run as Administrator) the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility, and remove all references to .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service
pack 1 (only!).

Then reinstall .NET Framework Version 1.1 Service pack 1:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai…

Then run Windows Update again, to install KB929729.

My windows can't check for updates (windows vista home premium). it's showing error code 80244019

Press Win+R, type 'services.msc' and press Enter. Respond to the UAC prompt. Check that Background Intelligent Transfer Service is started and its startup type is 'Automatic.' (It can also be Automatic (Delayed Start).) If it is not started, right-click on it and select Start. Scroll down to Windows Update to make sure that it is started and it startup type is 'Automatic' or 'Automatic (Delayed Start).' If it is not started, right-click on it and select Start. If you had to start either service, try to run Windows Update again by clicking on Start -> All Programs -> Windows Update.

Cannot upgrade windows vista home premium from disc

Check the programs that vista says it can not update. They may be incompatible with Vista. You can find this out by running the Windows Vista upgrade advisor available for free at microsoft.com. If you really want Vista & can do without the offending programs you can uninstall them & then run the upgrade. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.
