The laptop overheats and then shuts down

Hi joshua1156,

Your laptop fan is not working. That's why the laptop overheats and shuts down. Replacing the fan will solve your problem.

Thank you for using fixya,

My Gateway computer shuts down ramdomly. This

Listen for fans coming on, as this sounds like overheating issue. If fans kick in and then stay constant or dont work at all.
The link is for Notebook hardware control, this will monitor the temp among other things (only reference as a guide any software can give you an indication but not exact temp) Generally if a laptop hits 90c it will auto cutout to stop major hardware failure normal running temp (40-55c upwards depending on use)
If the machine is overheating it could be due to blocked vents, faulty heatsink, fans not working or incorrect fitting and thermal paste.
In all honesty if this is due to overheat problems, as the machine has been cutting out my strong advice would be to do all the above ESPECIALLY re-apply thermal paste (arctic silver5) to cpu, it takes about 100-200 hours of use to start to work 100%.
hope this helps, let me know if i can be of further help

M675 fan is overheating

Have you tried a cooling pad? there are many usb or externally powered multi fanned pads/trays the P.c. can sit on, cool air is directed into the intake.
How are you using the Laptop? is it in a confined space? or on a warm surface? as you are well aware the slightest increase in core temperature will cause safety shut down.
I had a friend with the very same problem he was using his machine inside the case/bag (Silly Billy)
Hope this sorts it!

Laptop shutting off

There might be a setting in the BIOS that shuts down the computer when the processor gets too hot. so, getting better cooling or turning off the setting will stop it. but, if you disable the setting, the Processor could overheat and explode.
