Question about Canon PowerShot S400 / IXUS 400 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Camera No Longer Being Recognized

My powershot SD400 is suddenly not being recognized by any photo importing programs on my computer. It has worked fine up until now, this morning I hooked it up & rather than giving me the option to open with several different programs, there's not one program listed with which to access the camera. When I open Adobe or Get Canon neither program recognizes the camera when it is plugged into the computer even while the empty dialog box with no program options which opened upon plugging in the camera is present, indicating the computer does recognize the camera is plugged in. I've been through the options in the camera itself & i can't find anything changed from the settings the camera had when it was being properly recognized by the photo import programs.

Does it connect to the PC via a USB cable? Then try connecting to a different USB port or if you have try a new USB cable. I had the same problem with my IXUS 400 and changing to a new USB port, directly to the PC - not a USB hub, it worked. However now I have several issues with my camera - no sound or image on the LCD screen, but I think these are unrelated.

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO A COMPUTER
If your photos and videos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos and to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

My CANON Power Shot SD1100IS is no longer recognized by my laptop. It was recognized before, but one day it stopped working. The battery is okay, i tried locking and unlocking the card but nothing seems...

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

USB device not recognized

Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-do-i-download-photos-or-pictures.html
