Kenmore Refrigerator Model #596.76522500

Noticed yesterday that the refrigerator was warming up as was the freezer. We bought this unit 2.5 years ago, and it seems it only has a one year warranty. I pulled the back cover and the van is running, the compressor is warm/hot to the touch and seems to be running. Of the three or so different copper lines that are tunning out of the compressor one seems to be cool.

Yes, the compressor itself is warm and the line that runs to the coil under the unit is also warm.

  • bashley3 Jan 27, 2008

Alright, I checked the coil from the front and it was indeed pretty dusty. I completely cleaned the coil and am now waiting to see if this helps bring then temp of the refrigerator down. The freezer is holding right now at 0 but there is a small amount of frost on the very back of the freezer, not what I would call an unusual amount.

The refrigerator is room temp. Should this help now or is has this possibly caused a bigger issue since the coils were so dirty?

Thank you for all your help so far!!!!

The fan was running yes. On this model how do I check to see if the fan in the freezer is running? The back of this fridge is solid and I could only gain access to the bottom back and front...

  • bashley3 Jan 27, 2008

I cant seem to locate the fan for the fridge and its still at about 74 degrees with the freezer holding its own...My guess is the fan isnt running since we should have seen a drop in the fridge by now....

  • bashley3 Jan 27, 2008

Okay, i was able to remove the small back cover in the freezer and got to the fan...it wasn't moving...i gave it a flick with my finger and it started (and continued) spinning...

  • bashley3 Jan 28, 2008

I'm not sure if i fixed it as i haven't seen any temperature change yet and the fan does seem to be moving as fast as one would think...i could be wrong tho. Is it normal that i can stop the fan with my finger and it wont start moving on its own again? If i flick it with my finger it will move...but stops easily if i touch it...

Thanks you have been a great help!

fridge and freezer are warm wont get cold.We checked the fan in back and vaccumed out the bottom.

  • helpmyfrigde Feb 25, 2008

We have this fridge and it won't get cold on either side . I've checked the fan on back as well as the fan in the freezer and both are working. None of the cooper tubes in back are cold to the touch and I cleaned thye coils in the front. What more do you think I should do? If you can help I would really be inappreciative.

I have the manual here a couple more thing to check is 1st the coil you felt the line to is it clean?? remove the front kick plate and look in with a flashlight.. If it is pretty clean then the next step is to check in the freezer on the back wall is there any frost build up in just one area?/let me know

No what happens when the coils get dirty it blocks the air flow to cool the condenser coil and compresser thus cutting down on the cooling effecy. the compressor has an overload that will shut it down if it gets too hot then auto reset to start back up you said the condenser fan was running right??? Well this pulls the air and dog hair and dust from your house across the coil to remove the heat it has transferd from inside the refrigerator cools the coil and goes out that vent holes in the back panel.. One other thing to check is the fan inside the freezer working?? this is needed to blow the cold air into the refrigerator section

There is only one fan and it is mounted above the coils (were you see the frost) you will need to remove the back wall in the freezer you can feel in the top back left corner of the refrig. section with the freezer door closed to see how the air flow is you may have to remove a cover or reach under it feel the air flow.. If the fan is running and the cooil is clean and no large ice buid up give it some time it should start to cool down

Freezer is not cooling properly

Look inside the fresh food section behind and inside the control panel for a defrost timer and circuit board. Let me know when and what you find. Please unplug first, Thanks, Sea Breeze

These parts can produce a snapping or clicking sound
when turning the refrigerator on and off. The timer also
produces sounds similar to an electric clock.

Freezer only cool, fridge not cold as well

it sounds like the relay on the back of the unit may have gone bad.or the compressor has a leak in the line...call a tech out and have it checked...it may be cheaper to get a new fridge

Freezer/Refrigerator tempurature swinging wildly

The compressor is overheating and not starting. Could be just the start relay. If this happens again try unplugging it for about an hour then it should work for a while. Heat between doors is normal this is an electric heater designed to keep the doors from sweating. You just noticed it because the refrigerator wasn't cold.

Warm refrigerator/freezer

very good chance it is the same problem or possibly a leak of refrigerant due to joint failing where compressor is joined to pipework
